Not sure I agree on that guys... maybe the experience depends on the movie theatre equipment, settings, etc? Cause since I recently watched a 3D movie for the first time I was blown away by the effects.
Pretty much what makes me want to go to the movies now.. it's so crisp and crystal clear; a movie theatre with digital 'Real D' 3D is what you want to watch.. like eye candy.
 
3D is a great feature. Right now it seems as though everything is in 3D. My only issue is that some movies make great use of 3D and other suck. The Avengers was magnificent in 3D, but some other you can barely tell that it's 3D.
 
I think you are right on that! It must definitely be depending on which movies and how they use it. My first experience in 3D was Prometheus and second a week later was MIB3.. then I realized both those movies used the same newer Real D 3D.
I think Avengers is also using this. Haven't seen it yet.

As for me, I'm not sold on 3D. It's sweet some times, but glasses on glasses is a pain and the technology is still in its infancy. It's promising, but for now I prefer 2D.
 
Just voted, though it is only based on my 2 recent movie experiences.

Thanks HOH for posting link again, I had to decide whether that still belonged in the Batman thread or on this spin off ;)
 
Depends on which movie. The Avengers is great in 3D but I've seen other movies when its not impressive.
The new Batman without 3D thank you very much.

Yes, I wonder it's not a coincidence that all the ones that get good reviews are all using the Real D 3D... haven't seen any movie with older tech so this should be more like from 2012+ 3D or not to 3D..
 
My biggest problem with 3d (besides that you have wear goofy glasses) is that it shrinks the screen. It is okay for IMAX 3D since the screen is ginormous to begin with, but normal screens, things look too small. Also you need to be towards the center of the screen, anything to the side and things start looking weired.

That's weird, I did not experience that. Did you experience this with the new reald 3D technology?

These look like the very same glasses distributed by the movie theatre I went:

What I liked is that I could move my head slightly to the sides while staring at the screen without causing a lot of parallax; the 3D portions would move as if they would follow my head movement yet the 3D effect would not get distorted at all..

I looked this up and maybe this is why:

RealD 3D cinema technology uses circularly polarized light to produce stereoscopic image projection. The advantage of circular polarization over linear polarization is that viewers are able to tilt their head and look about the theater naturally without seeing double or darkened images.[2] However, as with other systems, any significant head tilt will result in incorrect parallax and prevent the brain from correctly fusing the stereoscopic images.

I haven't tried looking at the screen from the corner of my eye while facing the other way; maybe I'll try testing this next time around.
 
3D works best for action movies, especially those with CGI. Tron, Avatar and the Avengers are the only two movies for which 3D made sense.
 
No 3D thanks, not with the current technology. You only really notice the 3D effects at the start of the movie when you eyes were still adapting to it but about 15 to 30 min in, you won't even notice the movie was in 3D. That and a 3D movie ticket cost $25 AUD, the cinemas include the price of the 3D glasses in the ticket, and it wont allow you to reuse the old pair you have.
 
Yes, I have to agree on that it is rather steep.. over here 15 bucks a pop and I throw the glasses in the recycler bin as I get out of the movie theatre.

I guess also it depends on how the 3D effects are used.. they can be very tastefully used or completely abused.. I think Ridley Scott did a wonderful job with Prometheus.
 
Nowadays I keep a pair of glasses at home as they are looking to charge for them. Does 3D have a future? I'd say yes. For some movies its exceptional however we are 2-3 years away from commercial glasses-free 3D. However people will value 4k resolution much more than 3D but 4k won't be mainstream until 5-10 year. Many studios are already filming in 4K and the missing piece of the puzzle is medium. 200-300GB is the size of a 4K movie and no Bluray disc is large enough for that and streaming is obviously not an option and won't be until telecommunication companies beef up their capacity.

Even today most internet lines are incapable of streaming a bluray film and with a bitrate of 250Mbit/s a 4K movie would strangle the line of most companies.
