The first edition of the Chicago Motor Show was held in 1901, making it one of the oldest car shows in the world. The Chicago show was once one of the nation’s largest automotive events but it is overshadowed today by bigger, more important industry trade shows held in New York, Detroit and Los Angeles.

Inspired by our friends at Japanese Nostalgic Car, we browsed through the show’s vast archives and picked out noteworthy photos of European cars on display during the 1970s. For many, the 1970s marked the beginning of color photography so these images allow those of us who weren’t around back to better experience each automaker’s stand.

The American automotive landscape in the early 1970s featured some odd trends, including the Europeanization of Ford with cars like the Capri and the DeTomaso Pantera. It’s interesting to note that some of the companies that are considered prestigious today were little more than also-rans back in the day because they were represented by their dealers or importers, not by the factory – look at the picture of the 1971 Lamborghini stand below. The following year Ferrari had four cars and what looks like a hand-painted sign.

Although the new car market in the 1970s was less diverse than it was in the 1960s, companies like Peugeot, Renault and British Leyland (later Leyland Cars) all attended the show on a regular basis. They likely assumed their sales would finally take off when the oil crisis hit in 1973, but domestic and Japanese automakers responded quickly with a wave of small cars that generally outsold similarly-sized models built by European automakers.

I love to check out these legends from the 1970's. The Maserati Bora and Merak and that Citroen SM were really such beautiful cars, nothing nowadays has their elegance and design purity. The Fiat X1/9 was another lovely little car, it was like a mini Ferrari 308 GTS.
 
Look at the a Triumph TR, and not a MINI in sight, and people say a MINI sports car makes sense, madness make it a Truimph TR and be done with it.

What's the Ferrari beside the Daytona, I have no idea what model it is?

Love love love the Maeratis on display, except the federal bumpers.
 
i'm not an huge ferrari's fan, but i love the 365/4 daytona, both coupè and spider, since i was i child, who used to watch miami vice (although it was a replica)!
 
I wonder what that carpet looked like under those cars back then? Most of those European cars leaked oil like piss back then lol.

Funny how there where so many awesome cars in these days, and pretty much every brand had something amazingly special and advanced.

Now it's just the German brands mostly, with the rest wobbling behind them.
 
So Ferrari, McLaren, Lotus, Caterham, Morgan, Pagani, Lamborghini make nothing special, most would argue that they do.
 
I don't think that's what klier meant. But I partly agree with him.
I would say that cars before had a stark personality that defined them as a brand. They still do, but not like they did before. The line that separates one from the other is starting to blur as manufacturers seek to attract customers from other brands, which is totally understandable. I don't think the germans are leading as they used to though.
 
I fully agree with all your guys comments the cars in those days were much more distinctive and original in design. I think the designers in those days had much more imagination with creating car designs that were striking, beautiful and timeless. The cars today are too fussy in their designs with too many strange looking lines and shapes that get dated too quickly. And nowadays their are too many brands that tend to copy the design features of some other brands instead of doing something attractive and original.
