Top Gear test driver The Stig has been unmasked as professional stuntman and Le Mans racer Ben Collins.

Ben Collins

For years the identity of The Stig has been a closely guarded secret, but Collins – who has previously competed in Formula Three, Le Mans, GT and NASCAR – has apparently outed himself to staff at a Bristol gallery.
The 33-year-old let his secret slip when he asked them to help him produce a limited-edition print of The Stig in action.
Gallery owner Simon Whitehead, 27, said: "I was absolutely amazed when he said he was The Stig, it was quite a big thing in a weird way."
Builder Jason Goody, 21, also discovered The Stig's identity when he did some work at Collins' home and found the famous white suit and gloves on display in a cabinet.
Other fans of Top Gear, presented by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, have been closing in on Collins in recent months. One YouTube clip shows The Stig, in full disguise, talking with a Bristol accent to a foreign TV crew – and then cuts to Collins sounding very similar.

I'm the real Stig! :)
Now that we know who the "real" Stig is, I can't help but think that sometimes it's better not to know the truth...a big part of "The Stig" appeal was about the mystery of not knowing who he really was...

Sorry but i thought he was the black stig, wrote it in his book and then got replaced by white stig who isn't a single driver but many ?

hmm... since the secrets out i wonder how they're going to kill Stig no.2 off the show? if that is they are going to find a new Stig :eusa_thin

Ok, so what color for the next stig ? Pink ? red ? yellow in front brown in the back...

Finally... but imo, it wasn't worth waiting! I always thought... they're more than one! :D

There's 4 Stigs normally, on the show. depends what sorta car or vehicle needed to be tested.

Heikki Kovalainen was the 2004 Stig who tested the 2004 Renault. Olivier Panis was the Stig when thet drove the Toyota F1 car indoors.

There's also a champion, ice mobile champion, who raced James i think, down the mountains. i can't remember his name. Nick something.

Who are they fooling? Even a 5-year-old knows The Stig is not a human.

TopGear.com Reveals The Stig Is Actually Graham Hill

It seems that the Telegraph was wrong in their recent article. TopGear.com has come out to officially reveal that the Stig is none of other than dead legendary racer Graham Hill! Turns out his death in the 1970’s was actually faked and he’s been hiding out in a bush ever since.

They also revealed that the chairman of crisis-hit Royal Bank of Scotland, Sir Tom McKillop as well as Barack Obama have also taken turns portraying the Stig.

Most shocking of all though is a scandal that has surfaced in which Clarkson has been exposed as a big liar after claiming that the Stig had magnetic knees. Turns out it isn’t true according to a smart scientist. Shame on you Clarkson for lying to us all.

As said, The Stig changes under the uniform.
And I remember hearing that Ben Collins was The Stig a looong time ago. Think someone at FAF proved it long ago.

The identity of the Stig is a story that simply won't die and according to the latest reports from the UK eight drivers have donned the white suit and helmet to portray Top Gear's legendary speed demon.

While two of the Stigs were not named in the Daily Mail's article, one of them reportedly spilled the beans and told the reporter who else has played the infamous driver. Among the many Stigs he named are F1 drivers Heikki Kovalainen and Julian Bailey, former GT world championship driver Chris Goodwin, stunt drivers Terry Grant and Russ Swift, and Swede Dan Lang who preformed a snow mobile jump in the show's winter Olympic special.

While it does make sense that a variety of Stigs are needed to film certain stunts, it seems slightly odd that there are so many of them. With Clarkson's mocking of the recent round of speculation, don't expect any official comment from the Top Gear hosts or the BBC anytime soon.

Stig is like 007. It all depends on what, where and when. Just like Bond, there could be several of them over a period of time but there is always one 007.

The Resurrection of the Black Stig:

As if all the controversy and speculation surrounding the true identity of Top Gear’s “The Stig” wasn’t confusing enough, a video popped up on YouTube yesterday showing the Black Stig, the original mystery driver, emerging from the ocean.
The video has raised a lot of speculation that BBC is bringing back the character after the identity of the Stig was revealed over and over again last month. The original Black Stig, was the brainchild of host Jeremy Clarkson and joined Top Gear in 2002. The character was then “killed off” after he was identified as British race car drive perry McCarthy.
A press release was released following the video stating: “until now, the original Stig from BBC Top Gear was thought to have been killed back in 2003, when he drove a modified Jaguar XJS off the end of HMS Invincible aircraft carrier at 109mph. . . The nation was shocked that the Stig was dead. However, recent footage has been found on YouTube showing that he miraculously survived.”
