Videos The Official DRIVE Thread

This is a tough comparo for me to choose one over the other. I love, love, LOVE Porsches. But with a carbon monocoque chassis, Ricardo engine, etc. etc., the Mac can't be denied. The interior is bland as bland can be though.

My decision.....

991 GT3 in that gorgeous blue revving to high-heaven (come on, tell me you guys did not see that coming :p )

Monkey rocks another one - funny and informative.

Yes free content maybe but you were right in saying they've ruined it.

Yes videos cost money, yes views and subscribers = money for content but take those stats, make more money by selling off to a television station who then tells you what to do and in doing so screw the original views and subscribers in the first place.

A balance can be reached, this is not one.

The first subscription video goes live on Thursday. It's the LaFerrari. The car is stunning - And the free channel gets the 235i drift video

Interesting. I can see their point about about having to pay bills. But OTOH, the bar for quality is pretty damn high to make me pay for a car video. And to consistently deliver that will be tough - a LaFerrari only comes along once in 10 years. And if it is anything like the video that aired on NBC, no efffin way! It is probably one of the worst CH videos - the other 2 guys really suck.

Love it or hate it, but the monetization of Youtube was inevitable and this is the genesis. Google has spent the last couple of years re-focusing the layout of Youtube as a quality and content focused discovery tool, instead of it being a service that's used for watching locatz and fail videos. Now that Youtube has become a media juggernaut and a household name, they're ready to start charging for it.

This is just the beginning and I'm certain that even more motoring publications (EVO, Autocar,Motor Trend, etc) will follow suit. Magazine/print media sales are dwindling as it is - this seems to be the next best way to revive the industry and perhaps make it more profitable. The problem is, if every youtube channel starts requesting $4 for good content every month, then it'll become too expensive. I sense that Youtube will eventually roll out a flat rate ($8/month a la Netflix) which will enable one to watch unlimited paid content per month. Drive is a pilot project and if it takes off (which I think it will), this will completely re-imagine how people consume content, and IMO, it will be a stepping stone in ending the legacy of cable TV operators which have colluded and monopolized the media and content for decades.

Good news, Drive posted a new video

Bad news, if you're not a paid subscriber, you get the 2 minute version.

I've done video before so i KNOW the costs and it gets high fast. However, there are so many other ways to do this, but I guess depending on what they signed and who they're working for this is the only solution forward for them.

That said, I won't be subscribing to DRIVE.

I have been in that car, it is one sweet sounding car, probably the best sounding flat 6.
