Z Series The Next Generation BMW Z4 - Coming in 2018?

Post number 670 has been selected as best answered.

The BMW Z models are a line of roadsters manufactured by German automaker BMW. The Z stands for Zukunft (German for future), and has been produced in four different series with six generations consisting of roadster, coupé, sports car, and concept variants. The introduction of the M Coupé and M Roadster in the Z3 line marked the first of the Z series to have a high-performance BMW M variant. The first generation Z4 also continued to offer M Coupé and M Roadster variants. The current Z4 (G29) uses BMW's (B58B30) inline-six, its platform is the basis for the current Toyota Supra.

That render looks really spot on based on the mules.

Which is basically what we were debating a while ago @SCOTT27, this does not look at all like the VCD Concept. Which I am not saying it is a bad thing. Just that it has its own unique theme.

That render looks more fit for a Miata competitor than a Z4 replacement. It's too cute and friendly.

Yes but too show how ideas from the Vision ConnectedDrive Concept can be adapted to provide more realism. The Character-line dissecting the car in half the sharper edges and even the lower flank sculpture to make it more realistic.

I see some BMW designers liked the AMG GT frontlights aproach and have followed it with the Z5 frontlights.

Its not really as it is similar to this amateur sketch.

Discovered today it looks as if Z5 M is going to be a thing.

As an owner of a 2007 Z4M Coupe, im extremely excited to hear of a Z5M. Lets hope the coupe is approved for production. Can't wait to see this thing when the camo comes off.

Yeah looks a bit like that with the camo. Hope it will not be like the AMG GT because I don't like those lights.

It's funny. If it were any other model, it would have been axed long ago due to the lackluster sales.
To be fair, part of the reason why the sales have tumbled so much is because it is quite dated by now (not the only culprit, but one of the primary reasons)

That design sketch posted by Scott looks great. Very aggressive front end, side looks beautifully sculpted! Cant wait to see more.

'Hopes to replace the Z4 by 2020'? The title of this thread always makes me laugh when I read it. WTH are BMW and Toyota up to? A Z4 replacement is not rocket science.

Its known as a pooled resources car so essentially its lightweight content will not just benefit its dynamics but also severely undercut its rivals in regards to price per lightweight ie Carbon content.
Plus it looks amazing as you will see. The interior is a perfect place of simplicity with driver and passenger separated. Plus there will be exclusive (to the Z5) engine options that are upgraded from their standard versions.
Its not the render in AutoBild.

Will it be still cleaner than recent and coming interiors (G11 / G30 for example)?

Well it mixes concept with realism. As you can guess all this exposed structure is not appropriate for production, the surfaces are but it will be familiar with a mix of both Z4 Generations but more driver orientated.

Scott, When can we expect to see the car? Is it really going to take until 2020? Given the spy shots, i would expect the car to be revealed by 2017 at the latest, especially since the current z4 has been in showrooms since 2009.

No 2020 was in regards to the media report. But now we know the car is in development and testing publicly we should see it in around eighteen months.

But you will see it earlier than that.

Thats great news! Thanks for the info Scott!

Dressed in heavy camouflage, the model has classic roadster proportions as it features a long hood and a relatively short trunk with an integrated rear spoiler. Additional styling details are hard to make out but the prototype has a wide grille, a rakish windscreen, and what appears to be a dual exhaust system.

More importantly, the Z5 will eschew a retractable hardtop for a more conventional canvas roof. This change should enable the car to have a lower center of gravity as well as a lighter curb weight.

BMW has been tight-lipped about the model but it is being jointly-developed with Toyota. The companies will each build a sports car based on the same platform and both automakers have said the resulting models will have unique styling inside and out.

Toyota's sports car is expected to have a hybridized powertrain, while the Z5 is slated to have an assortment four turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines. There have also been rumors about a high-performance M variant which could produce up to 425 horsepower.

The BMW Z5 is expected to be introduced in late 2017 or early 2018.
