Z Series The Next Generation BMW Z4 - Coming in 2018?

Post number 670 has been selected as best answered.

The BMW Z models are a line of roadsters manufactured by German automaker BMW. The Z stands for Zukunft (German for future), and has been produced in four different series with six generations consisting of roadster, coupé, sports car, and concept variants. The introduction of the M Coupé and M Roadster in the Z3 line marked the first of the Z series to have a high-performance BMW M variant. The first generation Z4 also continued to offer M Coupé and M Roadster variants. The current Z4 (G29) uses BMW's (B58B30) inline-six, its platform is the basis for the current Toyota Supra.

Scott quick! Take that front end back to the design board before it's too late!

:p

Haaha no. The front fascia will have matured since this rendering.

But in reality it uses elements from the initial Vision ConnectedDrive and 328 Hommage concept cars. Although the Z5 is longer than both, so proportions are stretched.
When the daylight photographs appear you will see the front has additional camouflage covering the nose.
They actually intended to mimic the Fiat 124Spyder with the camouflage.

Here comes an exciting car. But good enough to take on Boxster dynamically?

The fabric roof looks fake, given the lack of a rear window.

I think it's genuine. In the recent past BMW have partially swirly-camouflaged the rear sections of the roof and C-pillar where it's been a folding hard top, and when it's been a fabric roof, they've not really disguised the roof at all.

Just an observation, I could be wrong.

It will be lighter than the current Boxster. It depends on how Porsche implement progress in later generations. Boxster is the Benchmark.

The Roof shows the ribs of the folding mechanism, a hardtop would have a flat panel, split at the rear.

I think the upcoming Z5 Active Roadster will be more of a cruiser than of a driving machine a la Boxster.

The chassis is impressive and it also features a Carbon Core. Expect BMW to showcase this well before the launch. They want to use this car as a similar philosophy like BMWi except aimed for the sports car/ Performance segment, major emphasis on lightweight materials for a performance aesthetic. Instead of sustainability. Same philosophy but both with different ideas.
Potentially we could have a Z5 M rather than an M Performance model.
But nothing is confirmed as of yet.

Yeah that's what I meant with 'wobbly' ;)

So if the car's weight is targeting the Boxter, where looking at something like a 250 kg diet compared to the current Z4.

Will this replace the Z4 or is it a seperate new line ?

Its intended to be the replacement for the Z4 but they plan to slot another smaller Z3 under it by 2020.
Again this will be jointly developed with Toyota either as the replacement for the GT86 or Toyota are discussing reinventing Celica which apparently Honda are keen to revive Prelude all we need is Nissan with the 200SX and Mazda with an MX-6 and it is 1990 and the age of the mid-size Japanese Sports car all over again.

One thing is clearer in the daylight shots.
You can see that every area of the car is covered with panels of camouflage so it completely distorts the shape and design work of the surface.
The designer is known.
