They were diferent cars.
But the 2002 Turbos (especially with optional Getrag 5 speed manual) were actually better any 911 except for a 911S and later the supreme german machine Carrera RS (the S ceased production).
In motorsport BMW (with 2002 TI/Tii and TIK) won the 68 and 69 European Touring Car Championship at the expense of Porsche (911S ETCC speced).

So make no mistake about it the 2002 did fough and won (and also lost in some cases) against the 911.
And a 2002 Turbo would have left behind the majority of 911s in production back then.
