Reviews The Fuel Consumption Thread

Thank you. I'm trying to find a way of making them more professional and ultimately more accurate.

Have you thought of adding some driving notes? A few bullets, with comments about steering accuracy, comfort, practicality, etc - whatever you think is fit!

:)

Possibly. But then it will start turning into a "review", and I want to keep this to purely a real world fuel consumption assessment. My aim is to provide a VERY accurate real world comparison between various cars.

Fair point.

Then, have you thought of taking fuel samples and sending them for a chemical analysis? :D

Amazing work, mate! Keep it up!

Thanks. I have many more cars to add to this list, along with some improvements in the accuracy of my data. I'm flying to Istanbul from Kuala Lumpur tonight and I suspect I'll have some time on the flight to get the laptop out and prepare the data.

Ok, but stop telling me about the places you are traveling to and from :(
You make me feel small on purpose :D

Mercedes-Benz CLS 350 CDI
265 PS/620 Nm torque
Driving 95% of the time alone;
Average of 65.000 kilometers per annum;
75% Dutch motorway at 120 km/h;
20% countryside;
5% German Autobahn at approx. 160 Km/h average speed;
hardly no city.

Over the last 34.000 kilometers 5,8 l/100 km according to on-board computer.
according to myself it's about 5,9 l/100 km (based on tankvoluma of 80 litres, usualy putting circa 75 liters fuel in after 1.250 - 1.275 kilometers)

Claimed consumption by M-B 6,0-6,1 l/100 km

I have been thinking how to make the fuel data I'm uploading more accurate. It's clear there needs to be a method by which all cars can be compared. To just describe the test runs as being "urban" or "fast back roads" would not be descriptive enough and would also lead to interpretation as to what was "urban" and what wasn't. I've decided to stick with 120km/h runs in little traffic and over relatively flat roads. This is is the easiest way to achieve equal test conditions. Also, it is a reasonable speed that most people would be happy driving at day to day.

So to sum up. All test data will be sourced from driving the car:

* At a constant 120km/h for at least 95% of the journey
* In quiet traffic conditions to allow for less stop/start journeys, usually at night
* All the cars dynamic settings will be on the most efficient available
* Tyre pressures checked and set
* Fuel tanked is brimmed at the start and the end to manually verify the fuel consumed
* Roads must not be undulating and therefore should be relatively flat
* Passenger or luggage load should be no more than two people with a small amount of luggage at a maximum

So, I will not be including any data which falls outside the above criteria.

I have many more results to upload but I thought I'd upload my latest test next which I did a few weeks ago. It's the car I've been waiting to test for a while now and it interests me because it could be argued that it's the best "real world" car in existence.

BMW 320d (F30)

56.9 mpg

4.96 l/100km

Notes:

1) Arguably the greatest real world car around today. My three days with the car and 2,000km (766km was just the fuel consumption test) left me truly amazed how one vehicle can cover so many bases; speed, comfort, sporty driving, yet also be one of the most frugal cars I've driven.

2) A large part of my time with the car, which doesn't count towards the fuel economy data, was spent driving on twisty A-roads and at some pretty high speeds and engine revs. The fuel economy barely changed from the 120km/h cruise, dropping to around 52 mpg. Astounding.

3) The engine does seem to be noisier than I've ever encountered from a diesel BMW. I wonder if there has been some sound deadening removed to save weight?

4) It took me a while to get used to the gear lever which was a bit like a big wooden spoon in a bowl of porridge, and it was extremely easy to slip it into reverse instead of first gear when sitting at lights. However, after three days I did get used to it more.

5) Sadly I was disappointed the on-board computer seems to be very optimistic, indicating over 60 mpg. I genuinely thought this figure would be possible but alas not. I have found from experience that BMW on-board computers tend to be very accurate too.

Excellent write-up, thanks Betty :) A test of the 320d ED would be very interesting, to see just how large the real-world improvement is vis-à-vis the standard car :)
