Yes, one can see the Pininfarina lineage when directly compared to the FIAT 1500 coupe (which was far more rare than the very popular cabriolet) of the same era.:

Wonderful, that car. However, there was nothing "wannabe" about the 3200CS. It was one of the most expensive automobiles by a German manufacturer available in its' time. Hence, bonafide "Jet Set" and usually out of reach for gigolos and starlets who had no "Sugardaddies or Sugarmamas".

Fair one, at ~DM30,000 I know it was more expensive than contemporary BMW's... but I've no real idea what these other machines cost!

Well, in 1965, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT, for example, had a list price of just under 16,000 DM. The FIAT 2300S coupe was priced at just under 23,000 DM. The Peugeot 404 coupe went for just under 17,000 DM.

In that particular era, there were a number of coachbuilders who offered carbodies for BMW "Barockengel" chassis.

Reminds me a bit of the times with coachbuilders like Saoutchik.

Diana Dors and her Delahaye (coachwork by Jacques and Pierre Saoutchik).
