The second generation BMW 1 series hatch was heavily criticized by the print and Internet press for the design of its front. In an effort to create a nice 3D effect, the front bumper ended up with large areas of bland plastic, which failed to look good in darker colours both in pictures and in real life. The criticism also extended to the front lights that looked weird to many.

The latest spy photos, though, suggest that a facelift is behind the corner. The camouflaged prototypes suggest a major redesign for the front bumper and lights, as well as a small enhancement in the rear. As it is typical, small changes in the standard equipment for each trim level and the engine choices is to be expected.

On the other hand, the admittedly very high sales, prove that the facelift was not demanded by any sales issues, yet there are rumours that it was planned so that a new front design will be introduced for the new 2 series, set to debut with the facelift version of the 1 series hatchback. Those with a strong memory, will recall that this was also the case with the first generation 1er, as the hatch versions were facelifted a little earlier than expected and debuted along side the coupe and cabrio models.
