The nation has returned its verdict - the best-built and most reliable cars on the road come from Japan, while French and Italian brands are falling short in terms of making motors which really last the distance.

That's the result from Driver Power 2006, Auto Express's biggest and best-ever reliability and satisfaction survey, which you can read in the special pull-out report in the centre of this week's issue.

The numbers have been crunched and the results are in. Our table reveals the top and bottom five performers overall, and we've also picked out the best and worst for reliability - one of 10 categories which decide the Top 100.

Incredibly, 11 of the 12 most reliable cars are Japanese. At the other end of the scale, nine of the 11 models suffering from the most mechanical breakdowns are from French and Italian marques. And the most unreliable car on Britain's roads? You tell us it's the Peugeot 307.

The questionnaires returned by more than 46,000 Auto Express readers reveal Honda makes three of the four most reliable motors in the Top 100, but Lexus is the best manufacturer overall. So is it only doom and gloom for Europe's car firms? Not as far as Skoda is concerned.

The VW Group marque has put in its best-ever Driver Power performance, with three models in the top six. The latest Octavia was the highest new entry in the overall ranking, too. Another notable newcomer is Kia's Sorento, which nearly made the top 10 overall. And this year's questionnaire was so comprehensive, we're able to give you even more. Look out for another pull-out - focusing on best and worst dealers - free with issue 907, on sale 26 April.

Throughout the week we'll be delivering snippets from the survey online. But if you just can't wait to get your hands on all the information, best seek out and buy this week's mag at the bookstalls.

Hey, Im just the messenger

The verdict is:

Japanese cars are reliable but bland and cheaply made , French and Italian cars are crap.:D

Ha ha, this was so forseen. I can bet I can tell one of the top reliable motors: the honda s2000 motor.

The S2000 is amazing: bullet proof reliability from an engine putting out 120 hp litre (in its 1st generation ) in NA form: a stunning achievement. Honda can be justifiably proud.

Oh yeah...I love the S2k especially the fact that it's such a hardcore handler if you understand the car. I love cars that you can drive fast with out of the box but I love that cars that force you to become a better driver to get it's full potential even more...and that is what the S2k is. I've heard of lots of complains about people not being satisfied with it's handling and other such bs when they are pushing it and I just asked them "do you consider yourself a good driver? Good enough for this?" Ha ha...they just looked at me like i'm stupid :D I just love making fun of uninformed owners who think they are michael shumacher because they have a fast car.

The S2000 IS a little fidgety at the limit, but at any level just beow that is is responsive and a great ride. I loved the one I drove, though you do need to keep it above 5000 rpm - below that and you could be embarassed by a Corolla...

In Sweden we had engine recalls on S2000 in the beginning.

Bozzor, the S2k is just as Fidgety as the Yamaha R6 motorcycle. The R6 is the BEST 600class bike you could buy but that is only if you know how to push it. In everyday situation the Suzuki and the Honda are better because of their lower RPM limits and such and the fact that the R6 is very twitchy. The point is that the car/bike will only reward 100% if you are a really good driver. Keeping that in mind, the car/bike is only fidgety because the rider doesn't trust the car.

By the way..Just_Me we have not had a recall here whatsoever..at all.

I cant speak for your country but we had. I even knew a guy with a S2000 and had to make some changes.

Despite the recall, the S2000 has a reputation around the world for being bullet proof.

The S2000 is a car I drove at a track a few years ago. OK, will admit that there WAS a little moisture on the tack in patches and that may have contributed to the nervousness in its behaviour at the limit, but I simply did not connect with that car the way I did with the Boxster. The Boxster told me clearly what the limits were. The S2000 seemed to like to surprise me every now and then. Mind you, this was goign really hard and even in pretty aggressive driving the S2000 is well behaved...but it ain't no Boxster.

This is the rub for me, since reliability/durability is one of the top factors for me looking at cars, and a big part of the reason I have the car that I drive now. It's just a real tragedy that the Japenese don't take more care to make designs that prove more durable over time as their engineering does. They make cars that look great at the time of launch but in only five years do the cars begin to look out of place, cheap, and old. I'm always hoping w/ every new Japenes car launch that they'll finally have got design right, but I have yet to so an improvement. However I do believe the new LS is a step in the right direction, but I'm not on the market for a $60k+ car. Here's hoping that they make an "affordable" performance oriented car w/ good looks sometime in the near future. Next Supra anyone?

Hmmm, is there going to be a new Supra??? I have heard different stories...

Possibly, if there is, we should see something this fall in Tokyo. But again, I think I've heard that same statement for the past 3 years?

I actually thought the Lexus LF-A was going to be the new Supra when it was first spotted in heavy disguise around the Nurburgring, but that won't be the case. There is supposed to be a new Celica type replacement, but again not 100% confirmed...
