The all new Volkswagen Passat
The Passat is Volkswagen's bread and butter sedan in Europe, on sale since, well, 1973. After almost 22 million sales, its eighth generation has just been unveiled and will soon reach dealerships, in order to fight the competition from the European Ford Mondeo, Renault Laguna, Peugeot 508 and Citroen C5, as well as the Japanese Honda Accord and Mazda 6.
Design-wise, it's an evolution of the 7th generation, with a sharper front and rear end and a new shoulder-line at the sides. What is completely new, though, is the interior and the levels of technology offered for the first time with the Passat. LED head- and tail-lights, Head-Up-Display, Traffic Jam Assist, City Emergency Braking, Park Assist and the futuristic LCD instrument cluster from the new TT can be found in the optional equipment list. Chassis-wise, the new Passat sits on VAG's new MQB platform, thus loosing up to 85kg compared to the outgoing generation, while its fuel economy figures that have been improved by up to 20 per cent.
All 10 engine choices are introduced for the first time in a VW model. At first, a turbocharged petrol 1.4l TSI direct injection engine is available either with 92 kW / 125 PS or 110 kW / 150 PS TSI with active cylinder management. The fuel consumption figure is as low as 4.9 l/100 km (equates to 115 g/km CO2) – 1.3 l/100 less than the comparable previous model. Then, an 1.8 TFSI engine with 132 kW / 180 PS can be ordered, or for even more power a 2.0 TFSI engine with 162 kW / 220 PS and 206 kW / 280 PS is available. Three diesel engines are offered for now - a 1.6l unit with 110 kW / 150 PS TDI and two 2.0l engines with 140 kW / 190 PS and 176 kW / 240 PS, the most powerful four-cylinder turbodiesel direct injection engine (TDI) ever offered by Volkswagen. The latter requires only 5.3 l of fuel per 100 km (equates to 139 g/km CO2).
Also, a hybrid drivetrain is available, a plug-in hybrid that produces 115 kW / 156 PS from a TSI engine, plus a 80-kW electric motor and externally chargeable battery. With a system power of 155 kW / 211 PS, it is the most powerful plug-in hybrid from Volkswagen to date and can be driven as a genuine zero-emissions vehicle over a range of up to 50 km with all-electric power. A 7 speed DSG gearbox and VW's 4-MOTION all wheel drive system are also available in the optional equipment list.
The new Passat arrives on the European market in the fourth quarter of 2014 as a saloon and as an estate car. Order books open on July 10 with prices starting from €25,875 for the entry level sedan and €26,950 for the entry level estate model. An extensive photo gallery can be found after the jump.

Press Release:
The impressive Volkswagen Design Centre in Potsdam served as the ideal setting for the world premiere of a world-wide best-seller: the new Passat. The most successful European business car makes its debut with new engines, less weight and not least with the latest assistance, Infotainment and convenience systems. The car melts away class boundaries.
"This Passat heralds in a new era: when it comes to design and proportions, engines and drive systems, Infotainment and assistance systems or when it is a matter of safety, convenience and driving pleasure," explained Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen on the evening before 500 guests. The Group chief continued: "The new Passat gives the right answers to the major automotive trends of its time. For me this Passat is a premium class car without premium costs. This fits perfectly to Europe's most successful business car – lining up with 20 percent better fuel economy, up to 85 kilograms less weight and a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines – there is even a plug-in hybrid available."
All versions of the Passat belong to the most successful mid-size cars in the world and at 1.1 million units a year (2013) it is the Volkswagen Group's model series with the highest volume sold world-wide. To continue this success in the eighth generation, the new Passat is again offered in saloon and estate versions with a multitude of innovations. Thanks to cutting-edge design methods its proportions were made significantly more dynamic (including lower body, longer wheelbase and larger wheels). At the same time, the latest technologies have been applied. They include systems such as Active Info display (a fully digital instrument cluster), extendible head-up display as well as systems such as an app-based Rear Seat Entertainment for tablet computers, Front Assist plus City Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring and three more world firsts: Emergency Assist (vehicle stops in emergency), Trailer Assist (assisted manoeuvring with a trailer) and Traffic Jam Assist.
The new Passat will be available with 10 direct injection turbocharged petrol and diesel engines covering a power range from 88 kW / 120 PS to 206 kW / 280 PS. The engines all meet Euro 6 emission standards and both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions were lowered by up to 20 percent. All versions are equipped with a stop-start system and a regenerative braking mode. For the first time, the Passat will also be offered with a plug-in hybrid drive (115 kW TSI petrol engine plus 80 kW electric motor and externally chargeable battery). With a system power output of 155 kW / 211 PS it will be Volkswagen's most powerful plug-in hybrid and a genuine zero emission vehicle as it has an all-electric range of 50 km.
Advance sales for the new Passat begin on Thursday, 10 July. Prices start from €25,875 (saloon) and (correction vs. previous news release) €26,950 (estate).
