***Testdrove a BMW 118i 5-speed***

Dear Christian.

I have seen photos of your sister in one of your albums at the imagestation. And I have to be honest with you...

She really is one stunningly good looking woman.

Ah yes...the car.

Your sister has a good taste in car for what I see. The 1-Series really is the most unique of all hatchbacks. Personally, I think your sister would be better off with either the 120i or 120d. I found the 118i to be a bit slow...

Thanks Kowalski. :t-cheers:

I think the new 143-hp 118i will be more lively. I didn't find this 118i to be that bad though it seemed to run out of steam a bit at higher RPM's. It was overall a fantastic car and I imagine the new 118i will be even better. :usa7uh:

The 120i would have been a little too powerful for her needs. Diesels are out of the question since she doesn't drive 15,000 km+ per year, so the diesel tax and more expensive price will not pay off. :t-cheers:

and I strongly disagree on your comments on the gearbox, bmw has one of the best manual gearboxes. 1-series also has sportier feeling than on 3-series, shorter shiftings it feels like. I drove the new Golf GTI a couple of days go and I find the gearbox in the babybimmer to be more precise and with better feeling.
I think you are to obsessed with automatics thats why you dare to complain on bmw's finest, the manual gearbox ;)

I don't think the 5-spd tranny in the pre-facelift 1er is the most refined BMW manual. At least I've heard that BMW's 6-spd manuals are more precise.

This might be the reason I didn't find the transmission to be anything out of the ordinary. It was a great and smooth manual transmission, but it didn't feel like the precision tool described in most reviews. Perhaps this mainly refers to the 6-speed manual?

Nah, bmw 5-gear boxes got awarded a lot too but its true the 6 -speed is a new and improved gearbox.

It just didn't feel special. Either this car was an exception or I don't know a good manual when I drive one. :D

too many automatics for you, you have forgot how a proper gearbox feels like :D

I dont know what you expected but the gearboxes is precise with a nice resistence when changing gear. Its not exact and short shifting like a real sportcar gearbox but the gearboxes in bmw are well-known to be in the top in their "ordinary" cars compared to otehr german carmakers, (hence MB and Audi).
Then again you claimed the interior materials is better in 3-series than 1-serie when many reviews complain on the interior in 1er. I know bmw has listen to the critics so the interiors has been improved in facelifted 1er.
Maybe you like to go your own way, against others opinions ;) :D

In that case, the 6-speed must clearly be better by a wide margin. :D

Like I said, the 5-speed wasn't bad at all, but it didn't feel like the transmission described in most BMW reviews. :t-cheers:

LOL probably. :D

Regarding the interior, I do feel that the 1-Series interior is a little better built. And I also think the 3-Series interior looks good with the proper materials and colors. Overall though, I just feel that the 1-Series interior feels better built overall.

And I was always a person who stated his opinion. Peer pressure cannot change my mind. :D

Thanks Mirage and Bmer. :t-cheers:

She might actually work for NATO. Interestingly enough she was never interested in modelling. :eusa_thin

Thanks for the great review Christian, as always, detailed and informative. Even though many of the things you say may be "subjective," I tend to trust your comments and conclusions.

Nice pics, wish we could have had more and its great that you're doing cars other than MB now.

Thanks Mr. CC. :t-cheers:

I always try to be as objective and honest as possible in my reviews. I think I am doing a good job at it too! :D
