I heard about that but what about a roof box, or bikes, or canoes, or a windsurfer.....? the kind of stuff I often see on the roof of many suvs.

An update. :)

2014 Tesla Model X will be offered only with AWD, priced above Model S
Will be 'slightly' more expensive than Model S
So it'll be dual-motor all-wheel drive.

And the weight! With 2 electro motors & all the batteries on board to power both motors. No surprise this baby will cost even more than Tesla S.

I don't think both motors will need to be powered all the time. One will probably come on depending on traction or acceleration requirements. Under most conditions one should do fine. So you won't need 2x the battery to maintain the same range despite 2 motors.

Having said that I am more excited about the cheaper/smaller 3er sized car they are working on.

^Actually they do. Skiing is big here and there are lot of ski resorts in and around California, thanks to Sierra Nevada mountain range.

"We probably got a little too guy-centric on the S. So, we're hoping to correct that with the X" – Elon Musk

So in the case of Model X that's just taken a bit longer than we would have liked. In particular, getting the falcon-wing door right is extremely difficult. Things that you maybe wouldn't expect are also very difficult, things like the second row seats are quite a challenge because what we're aiming for with the Model X is that when you open the falcon-wing door, you have the second row seats essentially framed and we want that to feel like a work of art. If you open up the door it should be this amazing experience. I mean, it may sound a bit silly, but it should just feel like "ahh!" [laughs] And then the seat, I mean it's just the seat but we want the seat to be like feel like a work of art like something you could have in a museum. Anyway, that's where we're going for with the Model X, and it's bloody hard.

I think they have to dump the falcon-wing door, it's just a stupid idea for an SUV. Most people I know who have SUV's also have roof racks on them, handy things roof racks they carry all sorts of fun stuff like bikes, canoes, windsurfers, skis, roof boxes.......The next problem with this SUV is that it's electric, how is a person supposed to tow a boat, caravan, track car, as soon as you hook anything to one of these you'll destroy it's range.

Tesla Model X production slated for early 2015, will keep the falcon wing doors

Will offer a third row seat
The Tesla Model X was originally slated to be launched in 2013 but that date has been pushed back as the company focused on repaying their government loans and ramping up production of the Model S. Thankfully, the delays appear to be over as the company has confirmed the model will go into production early next year.

In an e-mail to customers who have already reserved the model, the company said the crossover "will be a production car that exceeds the promises made when we first showed the concept." The e-mail goes on to say the first prototypes will be built this fall and the production model is slated to roll of the assembly line in early 2015.

The message went on to state the production model will come standard with all-wheel drive and "deliver a level of functionality and practicality that will exceed what you saw on the concept vehicle." A third-row seat will also be optional and the model is slated to keep the concept's distinctive "falcon wing" doors.

Tesla Fremont Plant Idled for Model X Retooling

As Tesla looks to increase output of the Model S and introduce its third model ever, the Model X SUV, the automaker has idled its Fremont, CA assembly plant to allow for a $100 million upgrade, according toBloomberg. During the two-week shutdown, the plant will receive 25 new assembly robots as well as updates to the body shop and assembly lines.
All automakers experience shutdowns during retooling, and Tesla’s work staff of more than 6,000 can either opt to take vacation time or show up to the factory to complete training. The $100 million investment in the factory is more than twice what Tesla paid for the property from Toyota in 2010, and it was necessary to keep up with growing customer demands.

Tesla spokesan Simon Sproule told Bloomberg: “This represents the single biggest investment in the plant since we really started operations and enables us for higher volumes. It gets us ready to build X and to do it on the same line as the S.”

When it’s back online, Tesla’s plant will have a greater production capacity as well as the flexibility to build two models simultaneously. Earlier this year, Tesla was producing about 700 Model S sedans each week, and production was closer to 800 units per week just before the shutdown. Tesla CEO Elon Musk wants the plant producing 1,000 cars per week as the automaker spreads into new markets, which include China and the U.K. Later this year, Tesla will start shipping cars to Hong Kong, Japan and Australia.

There is still no word as to when production of the Model X will begin or how much it will cost, but it would appear that it could still be launched early next year despite a number of delays. Following the launch of the Model X, Tesla will continue the development of its next car, the Tesla Model 3, as well as the Gigafactory, which has yet to be finalized.

Tesla Model X delayed yet again, this time until Q3 2015

To conduct additional testing before release
Tesla Motors has announced the Model X has been delayed until the third quarter of 2015.

Initially, the Model X was supposed to go on sale late 2013 but then it was postponed until late 2014 after Tesla disclosed plans to pay back earlier than planned the $465 million loan from the U.S. Energy Department. Last time we heard the electric all-wheel drive SUV was slated to enter production phase early 2015 but now it has been pushed back yet again until the third quarter of next year when deliveries are expected to commence.

The announcement was made through a shareholder letter sent this week and the decision was motivated by a "longer than expected" process of getting the Freemont factory ready as well as by the additional time necessary for Model X testing procedures. Tesla mentions they are currently testing Alpha prototypes and initial builds of Beta prototypes while the powertrain development is almost done.
