I'm pretty sure I'd rather have the SWB(if it were available, probably a way to pull that off knowing MBUSA- I've seen some special deals they've done for celebs and people with $$$, straight from the factory).

Mercedes is missing a lot of opportunities without the Standard Wheel Base here in the U.S.

I have a lot of old S320 and S430 customers who will not buy the S550 because of price. Going from $65k for a E550 to $90k is too big of a gap in the 4 door market. And NO the CLS does not fill the gap. It has less room than the E. Mercedes is getting so fat and happy selling all the S550s they can't see what they are missing.

The U.S. would do well with a S450 swb priced starting in the upper $70k.

Well said. I agree with you completely.

the W221 does not work in SWB..it has to be LWB..to look right
so LWB all the way
it was diffent with the W220

It would be nice if MBUSA sold
S320 CDI swb
S350 swb
S420 CDI
S450
S550
S63 AMG
S600
S65 AMG
But it would probably just confuse people.

Yeah that is way too many models. Plus there would be a hybrid in there somewhere too.

Once sales dip to an undesireable level you'll get your wish. I predict they're going to hold off on the S450 until facelift time, should be the 2010 model year. Then the 4.6L V8 will develop something like 365hp with direct injection. The 5.5L V8 of course will go over 400hp easily. The did the S550 first this time around to make sure the S didn't get smacked around by the more powerful LS460 in the car mags, and/or they were surprised the LS460 went from 290hp to 380hp and canned the S450 at the last minute. Come to think of it that is what happened I think. The S450 and S550 were to arrive at the same time, but all of a sudden no one ever heard about the S450 again.

Don't forget the 4matic models!!:t-cheers: Here in germany, you can purchase the following S-Class versions: :eek2:

S 320 CDI (SWB, LWB, 4matic)
S 420 CDI (SWB, LWB)

S 350 (SWB, LWB, 4matic)
S 450 (SWB, LWB, 4matic)
S 500 (SWB, LWB, 4matic)

S 600 (LWB)

S 63 AMG (SWB, LWB)
S 65 AMG (LWB)

So, you really have the agony of choice! :D

LWB when it comes to the higher class S models like the S600 S65 and S63.
SWB might fit an S450, and those below. Thats about it. I really never cared for the SWB look of the S. The car has too much body-mass and flow.

IMO, the S-class has been designed to be LWB. SWB just looks weird.

It would be nice if MBUSA sold
S320 CDI swb
S350 swb
S420 CDI
S450
S550
S63 AMG
S600
S65 AMG

aha, I should say MBUSA also sells the 1/18 Die-cast W221 S550 SWB crafted by AutoART for fun-collection,:t-hands: which is sadly made not in a good quality but a high price as the fine 1/18 C216 CL-coupe. What will the AutoART W221-AMG look like? Still on current module and standard to craft an S65? I cannot accept that!

S63 LWB ONLY

I can see the merits of a SWB S-Class for markets where a little smaller may be necessary due to fuel costs, street size, etc. A smaller "S" diesel or economy 6 cyl certainly make sense for those who "need" them. The S63 however is not a "need" car and should only be available as the "big dog" that it is, a long wheelbase, high powered highway cruiser. If you want "smaller", get the E63. (Audi should take a lesson here and stretch the S8 to A8L proportions and finally have a competitor for the S63)

Well, here in Europe we have all versions of the S-class with long and standard wheelbase (only S280 available in RHD) and we are not confused :) MBUSA is selling S550 and above models because they are not very well sold here because of the high gas prices here (at least twice the US prices of gasoline). Here they sell enough "small" engines. And i don't understand why MBUSA doesn't offer the CLC-class in U.S. It's not very big priced and very beautiful

There is one reason for not selling the SWB - it is not possible (only possible in designo) to be Exclusive(full nappa leather interior + alcantara roof lining etc.) and U.S. market is very hard to satisfy. In Europe the S500 (S550 in usa) is the first to have standart leather seats in the SWB models. Smaller engines are with cloth and for that price...the cheapest here S320CDI RWD SWB is priced at 72352 Euro which is exactly $93100. and a cloth seats. Can you imagine that? So guys don't say that S550 LWB is not cheap because compared to our prices it actually very very cheap :))

Don't forget to mention, that there is no seat-heating, no command APS navigation, no park control, no Bi-Xenon, horrible looking 17' rims and the cheap looking Calyptus wood for the standard non-optioned S 320 CDI …:eusa_doh:…well before buying a W221 without any options, I would go for a E-Class or C-Class with a lot of gadgets! :D

You are absolutely right :) i hate that orange calyptus wood trim :) and no alarm system which, no bi-xenon lights, etc.. and not to mention that the same horrible 17' 7-spoke weels are on CL500 with rear wheel dive as a standart equipment for Europe. And no harman/kardon sound system as standart for here too. :D
