Steal a keyless BMW with phone app

This has been big news for the last seven days. In fact, this was known about six months ago.

It only affects right hand drive cars apparently. It allows thieves to enter the car and reach the OBD port by exploiting a blind spot in the car's motion sensor.

And a fix have been released....

Models produced from 2007 to September 2011 are vulnerable to process, but BMW has just released a software upgrade for affected X5 and X6 models. Software updates for other affected models will be available in approximately 8 weeks.

A BMW spokesman confirmed that the upgrade will be carried out by dealers free of charge. Owners with affected cars should contact their BMW UK dealers or call BMW's UK hotline on 0800 083 4397.

If this was known so long ago why has it taken till now before a software fix appears, according to 'Crime watch' cars are presently being stolen.

Imagine if BMW would have charged for this update :-)

I'm a bit surprized insurance companies have not sued BMW.

Yeah, I've read this a while back too.

On another note, BMW's can be restarted again without the key, seconds after you turn them off. This is without the Keyless Access feature:

It's very well documented on other forums.
