Jumping on the electric car news bandwagon, together with BMW's aggressive marketing of the i sub-brand and Audi's cancellation of the A1 e-tron and A2 electric concept, Daimler has just announced the start of production and sales of the latest addition to the Smart line-up: the Smart ForTwo electric drive. The new small electric car - set to be produced at Smart's plant in Hambach, France - following a €200m investment, will be officially available for order in Germany on June 12 2012 with the delivery of the first units scheduled for later this summer.

The Smart ForTwo electric drive is equipped with a 55kW electric motor, capable of accelerating from 0 to 60km/h in 4.8sec and reaching a maximum speed of 125km/h. A 17.6kW/h battery promises a 145km range in city traffic. Also, a new sale & care scheme is introduced which, makes it possible to either buy, finance or lease the vehicle at an attractive price and to rent the battery for a monthly fee.
