How fast is fast enough? How important are bragging rights when you're trying to sell a supercar? Because, let's face it, the difference between 73 mph and 273 mph is kind of academic. Even if it's proven your car can go that fast, there are very few situations where that extra 200 mph would be usable, especially outside of a track environment. Now don't get us wrong, we love these high speed shootouts as much as the next gearhead, but all they really accomplish are earning a spot on some list and selling more cars, if that's your game. SSC, the company that brought us the Diablo-esque Aero a few years ago, is one such player.

They've sold a few of their All-American Aeros over the years and haven't had many complaints. As if the "regular" Aero weren't powerful enough, they upped the ante in 2006 with the Ultimate Aero. Instead of the supercharged, 787 bhp, 6.2-litre V8 engine, they fitted a a higher boost supercharger and got a Veyron-topping 1,046 bhp. Still not content, the 2007 Ultimate Aero picked up a "Turbo" badge and a few more horses as well. Now producing 1,183 bhp, the Turbo becomes the most powerful emissions-legal production automobile in the world. Where the original Aero promised a top speed of 240 mph, the new Ultimate has had a few weight saving touches to go with its power upgrade and its top end has risen to a projected 273 mph. We've previously heard outrageous claims from many supercar makers over the years, but this is a whopper.

Well, it looks like it's put up or shut up time for Jerod Shelby (no relation to Carroll) and the gang at SSC. On March 21st, they are set to prove their claims. And to show that this is indeed a street car, they will be doing their test on a 12-mile stretch of Nevada's Highway 93 in Elko County. The immediate goal is to officially beat the 253 mph top speed of the current world's fastest car, the Bugatti Veyron. But the team really hopes to set the bar a lot higher and stay on the books a bit longer. Before the Veyron, the Callaway Sledgehammer had hit 254 mph, but it wasn't deemed a production vehicle. It was the slightly modified McLaren F1 that had held the official record for more than 10 years until the Koenigsegg CCX topped it. Soon after, the Veyron came out and used an extra 300+ hp to eclipse the F1 top speed by a full 12 mph. If SSC can hit 273, only the new biofueled Koenigsegg CCXR and Saleen S7 tt Competition (each with more than 1,000 hp) might come close. Oh how we'd love to be there for a Veyron/SSC/S7/CCXR/F1/Sledgehammer smackdown. We'll let you know how the test goes.

Who gives a $h!t how it looks anyway...?:D

:t-cheers:

Re: SSC Ultimate Aero set to go after "world's fastest car" title

Nothing about this car interest me. And it looks like a mix between rice and supercar.

Re: SSC Ultimate Aero set to go after "world's fastest car" title

YES! A thumb in the eye of the world's heaviest, ugliest, most pointless (because what's the point of a selling a car you don't make money on? At that point, it's an [excuse me for putting it this way] dick measuring contest. And those are pointless) car! With half the cylinders, to boot.

And it's American!

----NOTE: ALL OPINIONS ABOVE THIS LINE ESPRESSLY MINE. THEY HAVE NO PROVEN FACT, SO PLEASE DO NOT FLAME ME WITH NUMBERS AND LOGIC----

Re: SSC Ultimate Aero set to go after "world's fastest car" title

Yawn...

"Hey, look at me! I'm fast! No wait... the fastest! Love me! Put me on the cover of your automotive zine and fetch me some deposits! I'm awesome damnit!"

Re: SSC Ultimate Aero set to go after "world's fastest car" title

They just can't make a GOOD car. I remember AutoBild's 0-300kph test, when the Saleen hits the ground at around 280 kph:t-hihi: :t-hihi::t-hihi: It's just the car of overstatements.... I wonder what will it's 0-100kph time with only two wheel drive and 1100+ hp...:eusa_thin maybe 6-7 secs? :D :D :D

ps: And don't forget the Veyron is limited to 408kph (some safety reasons...)
This will be the first, 4 wheeled aeroplane...

Re: SSC Ultimate Aero set to go after "world's fastest car" title

Long live the Veyron.

The Veyron is a Concorde moment in motoring history. This SSC thingy is just a wannabe. What's more, the Veyron is a road-going Concorde you can use it everyday and best of all, it always stays in control. This thing may be more powerful than the Veyron, but it's rear-wheel-drive and that means, that while the Veyron stays controlled thanks to four-wheel-drive, the SSC would be like a Helicopter without the rear rotor. And actually, looking at the SSC you just know it's not aerodynamic enough to keep it on the floor at 273 Mph.

America’s Shelby Super Cars has failed to eclipse Bugatti as the maker of the world’s fastest production car, with its Ultimate Aero TT managing to reach a top speed of 230mph, 23mph shy of the Veyron’s 253mph mark. The widely publicized challenge, which was run yesterday on a closed off section of Nevada highway, was almost called off due to poor weather conditions the day before.

Behind the wheel of the American supercar was experienced road racer Rick Doria, who managed to keep control of the 1183bhp twin-turbocharged beast. Unfortunately, due to the weather, only two runs on a shortened two mile stretch of road was deemed safe. On his first run, Doria managed to reach 221mph. For his second and final attempt, he reached 230mph and claimed was only at 50% throttle while in top gear.

Both Doria and team leader Jerod Shelby are confident they can top the Bugatti Veyron if given a longer stretch of road. Shelby Supercars is expected to make another attempt within months.

Now that fast, is insane, without a brand name :t-banghea ...!

But still, if I get money for such buy, I'll go for a "CC-R/X" :usa7uh: ...!

This is was posted by a guy that was at the SSC test who works for MKM Racing (the people recording the data).

Short version, more later:

Four passes, some minor mechanicals such as excess crank pressure forcing oil out, overheating, but fastest pass was 228 mph on 90% throttle.

Power-wise, the car is a gorilla -- over 1000 hp. Tires broke loose in 6th at 190+ mph on full boost, so power isn't a problem. High-speed stability very good, wind-tunnel testing paid off. Test road was a little less than hoped for in smoothness, even with new pavement, but after SSC analyzes its test data I'm sure they will try again. Veyron's numbers appear to be easily achievable.

SSC Ultimate Aero TT hits 242 mph

Earlier this year, SSC Autos announced their intention of breaking the world speed record. And the latest result are showing that this is about to happen.
SSC lately tested the Ultimate Aero TT on May 22nd, when the car reached a top speed of 241.4 mph. The testing needed to be ended due to an unanticipated snowstorm. But the results of the tests make the company confident in the Ultimate Aero TT’s capability to break the world production speed record.
At 230 mph, the Ultimate Aero TT boasted nearly 1183 bhp.
The testing session confirmed the stability that the Ultimate Aero TT demonstrated at NASA’s Langely wind tunnel, which had previously shown the car stable up to speeds of 273 mph. During Thursday’s session, test equipment verified that front to rear downforce percentages and drag coefficients were well within the engineering specifications set by the figures posted at Langely.

America’s Shelby Supercars (SSC) is now officially the manufacturer of the ‘World’s Fastest Production Car’ thanks to its Ultimate Aero Twin Turbo supercar. The 1183hp (882kW) speedster set a new top speed record with an average Vmax of 255.83mph (411.76km/h), 3.11mph (5.01km/h) faster than the unofficial record set by the Bugatti Veyron. In order for the achievement to be official under the Guinness World Records’ guidelines, a vehicle testing for the top speed record must race down the course, turn around, and make a second pass in the opposite direction within one hour.
The vehicle’s ‘top speed’ is calculated by averaging the top speeds of each pass in order to negate any favorable road or weather conditions. On a closed stretch of highway in Washington State, the Ultimate Aero posted a top speed of 257.11mph (413.83km/h) on its first pass and 254.55mph (409.71km/h) on its return pass to set the new top speed record of 255.83mph (411.76km/h). The speeds were recorded using a series of satellites and several on board sensors, with independent firm Dewetron on hand to monitor progress.

Bugatti just lost bragging rights... I wonder if makes it a little harder to justify the Veyron's hefty price tag now.

Now that is sick, especially considering they didn't have a huge financial backing like Bugatti did from VAG.

I don't think this will affect Bugatti in any way. The Veyron is so much more than just one of the fastest cars in the world. It's an engineering masterpiece that's also one of the most luxurious cars in the world. Considering that VAG loses money with every assembled Veyron, I doubt we will see a price reduction.

They've also had to come out with a special edition in order to move the remaining 150 cars in a run of 300.
