SUVs and crossovers play a major role in Volkswagen's future plans of expansion. From its current lineup of only two models, the automaker plans to expand to no less than six, ranging from the baby Taigun based on the Up! to a large 7-seater crossover-type rival to the Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota Highlander.

The first major new product is expected to be the Tiguan, put together with all the lessons learned from the Golf. ItsMQB modular platform will be shoehorned into this new role and could share numerous components with SEAT's first SUV and the replacement for the Yeti.

And like the Yeti, we believe the Tiguan will have two distinctive versions, one that's at home in the city (low and efficienct) and one for adventures (tougher and with better clearances).
These latest spyshots show a test mule for what's likely to be the city-SUV being driven on Alpine roads. With a trailer behind it to provide extra electricity and stowage for the diagnostics equipment, the Mk2 is still hiding its major secrets but it sits low to the ground on wider front and rear tracks. Only the two front wheels are hooked up to the sensors, which could also mean this is a front-wheel drive version of the Tiguan.

Besides the engines VW has already accustomed us to, the Germans are planning to offer a few new ones, starting with an efficient 1.6 TDI making 120 hp. Tiguans have previously not been available with this type of engine (1.6 TDI), but thanks to the MQB platform, the vehicle will be lighter and thus better able to cope with low power.

Sadly, the first glimpses of the Tiguan's new interior don't tell us much. The whole dashboard is the same, which is pretty much what you'd expect from a test mule. Hidden behind the black fabric cover, its steering wheel could be brand new, but we don't expect it will be much different to the one on the Golf.

A big screen floating over the center console is visible, but it's likely just something used by the test engineers. It seems extremely unlikely that conservative Volkswagen will make something that's even remotely similar to Peugeot's design. However, the Tiguan will be plenty-different in the tech department. Many firsts for the non-premium C-SUV segment are possible: the first LED headlights, the first all-digital, the first twin-turbo 2-liter diesel and the first digital instrument cluster.

With many other compact SUVs poised to hit the market in the next two years, the Tiguan's success all depends on timing and the right combination of ingredients.

An evolution of the Cross Coupe concept
The Volkswagen Tiguan CC has been envisioned ahead of a possible 2016 launch.

Back in August we found out from Volkswagen Australia managing director John White the next generation Tiguan will look "phenomenal" and it will likely get a sleeker derivative as seen in theCross Coupe and Cross Blue Coupe concepts. Set to take on the Range Rover Evoque, the potential Tiguan CC is expected to feature a lowered roofline and an overall sleeker design compared to the regular version.

Besides the normal five-seat and this CC body style, the next generation Volkswagen Tiguan is believed to get a seven-seat variant with a longer wheelbase developed specifically for the Chinese market. The "totally redesigned” 2016 Tiguan as described by John White will ride on the MQB platform and should be offered exclusively with four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines.

An official reveal of the standard next-gen Tiguan will likely occur in the second half of 2015, followed shortly by the China-spec seven-seat variant and sometime in 2016 by the CC rendered here.

Looks like a smaller Touareg
A couple of fully camouflaged prototypes of the next-gen Volkswagen Tiguan have been caught on camera testing in the Alps with the production body.

The heavy disguise on these LHD and RHD test prototypes makes the new Tiguan look like a smaller Touareg, but Volkswagen Australia managing director John White has promised it will look "phenomenal" after being "totally redesigned." A previous report stated the new Tiguan will be stretched by 2.2 inches (5.5 cm) and will benefit from a shorter front overhang.

Volkswagen has already confirmed a roomier derivative with an extended wheelbase hosting three rows capable of seating up to seven people will enter production late 2016 at the factory in Puebla, Mexico. It is believed this version will be 7.9 inches (20 cm) longer than the standard model and Volkswagen has previously said it will be sold in North and South America and in other areas around the world, excluding China and Europe.

The standard Tiguan is expected to be unveiled in September this year at the Frankfurt Motor Show, with European sales to commence shortly thereafter. Aside from the standard and long wheelbase versions, the rumor mill indicates a possible third body style taking the shape of a stylish five-door with a more coupe profile.

The current Tiguan's design is a bit awkward but not offensive over all, the shape and proportions look very promising with the up and coming model, and based on vw's current models, I'm not too worried of any shocking finishing touches or details. Should be a good one, looking forward to official release and pics.

Woah, radical change here! Much much better...

It was not very complicated to top the current Tiguan, though. :D:D

Brilliant work VW. You make brilliant cars but damn you for making a conveyor belt of boring designs. This is the first VW in years that have a dynamic rear. The compact SUV segment is competitive, and although some buyers are penny pinching, they still demand designs that are pleasing to the eyes.
