To broaden my horizon I test drove an Octavia Estate today with the new 1.5 TSI engine. What a beauty of an en engine. Here on GCF we frequently praise V12s and smooth inline engine at 3-6L but when it comes to low speed refinement small engines have caught up!
At speeds up to 60mph the power delivery is much more linear and progressive than popular 2L diesels engine that knock you back when you hit the peak torque window. In combination with the DSG gearbox the response from standstill is very good for quickly darting into a roundabout. Naturally, the low weight massively helps. Bare in mind that the Octavia Estate has massive 600L boot.
There is also a handy sport mode when you need more immediacy. It quick but a 3L engine will take you from 40-100mph a lot quicker. However at town speeds and for building up speed in a sensible fashion it's an exceptionally talented engine. I achieve 36mpg during a 20min drive from a cold start.
The smoothness is so lovely that you don't think about or notice the engine much. Think of it as an engine with low speed characteristics of a 3 litre but the running cost of a 1L.
I might have caught the Skoda bug and will likely replace my X3 with a 1.5 TSI Karoq.
