Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake to Debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show in October

According to a Mercedes-Benz insider that wished to remain anonymous, the heavily anticipated shooting brake version of the CLA premium compact sedan will make its world debut this October, at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. Considering that a production-ready vehicle has been spotted lapping the Nurburgring earlier in July, this info is more than fitting, to be frank.

Internally known under the X117 codename, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake blends the practicality of the A-Class compact hatchback, the elegant styling of the CLA sedan and the family-friendly credentials of an estate. Don't think for a moment that the 'estate' part of the equation will compromise the aesthetic front of the Benz. After all, a shooting brake is far prettier than a station wagon, boasting similar storage capacity.

Various renderings, spy photos and videos hint that the upcoming Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake is shaping up to be the baby brother of the far more opulent CLS Shooting Brake. Visually, the CLA in shooting brake flavor features an assured muscular silhouette and a low-slung stance. From the front grille all the way to the B-pillar, there won't be too many aesthetic differences between the sedan and the shooting brake variant of the model.

As for the oily bits, expect a front-wheel drive chassis based on the same platform as the W176 A-Class and W246 B-Class. Various four-pot turbocharged gasoline and oil burning mills will be offered according to specific market demand, while swapping cogs will be dealt by your typical six-speed manual gearbox and seven-speed automatic transmission with paddle-shift capability. It's very likeky that a Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake will follow sometime in 2015, boasting a wildly potent turbocharged four-cylinder mill with 360 horses and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque to boot, resources that will be kept in check by an intelligent AWD system.

It's not known at the moment if the Stuttgart-based German manufacturer will ship the all-new CLA Shooting Brake over the Atlantic to customers in North America, but Mercedes has officially confirmed a little while back that the Euro-spec version will hit dealer showrooms on the Old Continent as soon as early 2015.

Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake on sale January 15, deliveries start March 1

Should debut at 2015 NAIAS
German media is reporting the Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake will go on sale starting January 15, 2015.

Mercedes-Benz announced recently the CLA Shooting Brake will be launched in 2015 but they didn't specify an exact date. Now, a German blog says order books will be opened on January 15 and deliveries will kick off on March 1. Judging by these two dates, the model will likely be officially unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit which will begin with the press preview on January 12 and 13.

The most practical A-Class is going to be the fourth member of the range after the hatchback, CLA sedan and GLA crossover and will likely carry over the engine lineup. It will be topped by an AMG derivative set to use the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo rated at 360 PS (265 kW) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft). Expect the AMG model to come out several months later after the regular CLA Shooting Brake's introduction.

Essentially an A-Class wagon with a sloping roofline, the CLA Shooting Brake will adopt a sleek appearance with longer rear doors and a more spacious trunk compared to the hatchback (340 liters) and sedan (470 liters) so the capacity should hit the 500-liter mark. However, the narrow opening commanded by the elegant mini CLS design will be a turnoff for some people.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake will cost a bit more than the equivalent CLA "four-door coupe" which in Germany kicks off at 29,214 EUR while in United States begins at 29,900 USD.

If they are debuting it here, then it should go on sale here. If not I don't see the point of showing it here. As they say, we will see!

This car will be my choice over a regular CLA, much better rear end design and practicality, can't wait to see it

Well now that it is known for sure it won't be coming to the U.S. I really don't care if they ever show this thing!

Mercedes to increase production in Hungary

Mercedes will continue to increase production in Hungary and is satisfied with the country’s market opportunities, Daimler’s deputy chairman for global affairs Eckart von Klaeden said in Budapest yesterday. Von Klaeden and Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán met in the Hungarian capital where they discussed Hungarian-German economic cooperation.

Both agreed that their two countries have maintained a successful economic cooperation, which ought to be continued. Germany is Hungary’s most important trading partner and the largest foreign investor in the country, PM’s press chief Bertalan Havasi stressed.

Should be unveiled shortly
The 2015 Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake has been spied virtually undisguised in Germany.

Looking instantly recognizable, the model features a familiar front fascia and a stylish rear end that echoes the CLS Shooting Brake. The end result isn't terribly practical but it should be one of the more attractive compact wagons on the market.

Engine options will likely carryover from the standard model so choices could include:

  • A 1.5-liter diesel with 109 PS (80 kW)
  • A 1.8-liter diesel with 136 PS (100 kW)
  • A 2.1-liter diesel with 170 PS (125 kW)
  • A 1.6-liter petrol with outputs of 122 PS (90 kW) and 156 PS (115 kW)
  • A 2.0-liter petrol with 211 PS (155 kW)
  • A 2.0-liter petrol with 360 PS (265 kW) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque

I have seen and sat in the production version. The main value added in comparison to sedan/coupe is rear headroom. As a result, it is a car for 4 full-grown adults.
