Back in the 1970s when Golf was 1st sold & manufactured in the US it was marketed under the Rabbit name.
When the Westmoreland plant closed VW renamed the Rabbit as the Golf for Mark 2 Golf.

Now when VW was going to Launch Mk5 Golf at Chicago Motor Show it was originally going to be called Golf for NA Market.........but a new Marketing Team is in Auburn (sp) Hills, VWoAs home in US.

Hours before launch it was decided to be renamed Rabbit to hark back to good old days when VW was doing well in US.
VW Personnel ripped off Golf badges & replaced them with Rabbit logos.

Now if you believe the forums what I've written in 90% accurate
