SLR gets a power boost! Continental GT Drops its top!

It's quite interesting, I would still like more info about the project. Just_Me posted a more readable picture.

Alright guys, I fixed the title. I also tried to upload a larger file but imageshack
won`t allow one larger than the one I posted for some reason. :t-hands:
It`s amazing how many of you can`t read the article. :t-crazy2:

Hehehe.... my superman vision is fading with age...

I`m guessing Mercedes will respond to this Bentley Continental GT convertible with a drop-top CL. Anyone else share the same opinion?

To be honest I don't think this will happen. The new CL will be larger in all dimentions than the current way and there is no way such a big roof can be packed in nicely in the boot. On top of that there is allready the SL which is also a GT car like the Bentley.

Am I the only one who have noticed that the article states that MB is working on a F430 rival codenamed P8? :t-hands:

Nope, that project has been scrapped.

Carlton, a CL convertible would be interesting now that the CGT is going to lose its top. It might happen, you never know. Some of us thought the CLK-DTM AMG convertible wasn't possible, but there it is.

For those of you who couldn't read the article, here it is:

MCLAREN-MERCEDES might now be enjoying some success in Formula 1, where driver Kimi Raikkonen is hunting down world-championships leader Fernando Alonso and routinely humbling Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari. But the company’s grand plan to become a Ferrari rival on the road is in tatters. Most of the technicians and engineers hired to produce the Mercedes SLR and a planned mid-engine rival to the Ferrari F430, codenamed P8, have now left the company in the awake of Gordon Murray’s departure earlier this year.
The Mercedes SLR you here testing at the Nuburgring Nordschleife is the work of the three technicians remaining in the company’s prototype shop. The car features revised aerodynamics, reduced weight, and a slight power increase.
Note the new front fenders and the large-diameter single exhaust pipe, part of a simplified exhaust system developed for the secret P7R race version of the SLR three years ago. The new exhaust has reduced weight and liberated an extra 30 horsepower from the engine, boosting total power to over 650. The front splitter also is from the P7R, say our sources, though the rear wing deflectors are new.
The SLR hasn’t been the world-beater Mercedes and McLaren expected, having been shaded by Ferrari’s Enzo and Porsche’s Carerra GT. Our sources say this car is intended to boot sluggish sales in much the same way the LM version helped shift the remaining McLaren F1’s at the end of that car’s production run.

Thats right Yaz! MB pulled the CLK-DTM drop-top right out of their hats.
MB is doing a lot of unexpected stuff these days.

You do have a point Luwalira but the Bentley CGT is a 4-seater and is a direct
compeditor to the CL. This is what makes me believe MB will respond in such a way. The Bentley CGT does not compete with the SL.

As much as I would like to see a CL cabrio I think it would be one model too many. Mercedes has to stop cutting into their own sales with these redundant models. A CL Cabrio would cut into SL sales I think. Then again a CL Cabrio would be huge by 4-seat convertible standards maybe not. Makes you wonder why they haven't done it yet. Mercedes has played around with the idea of CL cabrio since the C140 Coupe days. I think the current CL would have been stunning as a droptop, but that roof doesn't look it could have been modified properly because it sure wasn't designed as a convertible from the start. Now I wonder if the new CL was designed as a ragtop from the get go.

Also, there is a real chance the next CLK will be a hardtop convertible I suspect. Volvo and even VW have new 4-seat hardtop convertibles come to market. Then again Mercedes would be killing the CLK coupe if they did such a thing. I say they should stick to the current formula, it sells and there is no need to "fix" anything.

OK, I know we're all excited about the SLR but I found it amusing how Bentley disguised their car with Maserati Quattroporte taillights and side vents - LOL
