SL63 AMG & MCT 7 speed details by autocar

The new SL AMG looks soooo good!:icondroolI like it even more than the pre FL one.

P.S. I am very disappointed. The MCT gear box is too slow to compete with VW DSG or even BMW's SMG. What were they thinking about in AMG developing such a crap???:t-banghea

Apparently, according to the latest MB press release, the SL63 MCT shifts in 100 milliseconds in Manual Mode.

This is also the same shifting speed as the Ferrari 599 GTB, and quicker than the F430:

"the paddle-operated F1-Superfast can execute a gearchange in as little as 100 milliseconds, compared to 150 milliseconds for the F430."

as per:

Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano Technical Analysis - Winding Road - July 2006 :: Winding Road

So...:t-hands: (for now)
....but:eusa_dancwhen we see videos of the SL63 in action, shifting its gears).

Hi. Where do you get that it is too slow?

yeah thats not slow man come on..thats stupid fast..and think about it
its in a luxury roadster..its not really a sportscar..
im sure they can in the future fine tune this to even more rapid shifts..
imo this is a job well done by MB
and still holding with MB traditions..as the tranny is totally in house developed..and not bought by some specialis company..like most of the other brands

I thought that ferrari's gearbox is even faster than SMG.:t-hands: But nevertheless SMG is almost twice faster.

This about what gearbox is faster is bordering on nonsense. First of all BMW's SMG, Ferrari's "Superfast F1" and Lamborghini's "E-Gear" are all crap in automatic mode, which is where most SL drivers will use this new gearbox. We're talking millisecond differences here and unless you're on a track these other "faster" gearboxes are a pain in the arse in everyday use. Unless you want to use shift paddles all day, everyday. Now the new dual-clutch gearboxes, the VW/Audi/Bugatti DSG and BMW's new dual-clutch gearboxes are superior to this new MCT gearbox from MB in that they are faster and seamless in "automatic" mode, which again is where most these boxes spend the majority of their time. Thing is the SL isn't a sports car, a diesel or some other little fuel sipping car that needs big MPG numbers so for a car like the SL63 this new MCT works briliantly (or it should). Who cares if it is some milliseconds slower than some other gearboxes in cars of different purpose. Drive a M5, F430, M6 or Gallardo in "automatic" mode and then the SL63 and see which transmission is "better". Never seen anyone praise their performance (SMGs) when not on a racetrack. This whole thing about the MB DCT being slower is much ado about nothing IMO. Borderline nonsese at best.

^^
Well said. For MB usability is just as important as performance. Although the gearbox might not be as fast as SMG or any other racer transmission it will be comfortable to use in automatic mode just like the DSG box in the GTI. This is very important especially when a huge percentage of the SLs are sold on US soil.

You guys seem to know everything about MCT.
Where are you getting the info from?
I want to read Mercedes pressrelese about this gearbox. Give me the full pressrelese please.

As long as it's not jerky I don't care how fast it shifts. An SL is more of a GT for cruising, even the SL63.
