Singapore moves ahead with night race plans

Tuesday 16 October 2007

Plans for the first ever formula one night race in Singapore have taken a crucial step forward. The new race’s promoter said on Tuesday that it had contracted an Italian company, Valerio Maioli, to supply the bespoke lighting system for the event in September next year.

The decision follows successful lighting tests at Indianapolis earlier this year, and more comprehensive subsequent two-day trials at Bernie Ecclestone’s Paul Ricard circuit in France, it was revealed in a news conference.

1500 lights will illuminate the circuit so that it is nearly four times brighter than a typical sports stadium, while 24 generators will ensure that the lights will not fail, it was explained.

“Each power generator can power the whole race in the event of failure,” said Valerio Maioli, the lighting company’s chief.

The system will be ready to be tested in early January.

This is BS, the track better be brighter than the Las Vegas strip at night.

It will be as bright as day, Italians will be doing the lighting. Power generators are brought in by these people even though we've got enough power, in case of a power outage.

First Formula 1 Night Race Confirmed

For the first time in Formula 1 history, we can look forward to the first night time race which will be held in Singapore on 28th September after the FIA officially confirmed the event. Construction for the new street circuit in the Asian city began in August

It remains to be seen how driving in night time is going to affect the drivers, however it is unlikely to bother current world champion Kimi too much as the Finnish ice man has had to deal with about 3 hours daylight during the winter in his native Finland.

I for one am particularly looking forward to seeing the modified F1 race cars sporting some new cool neon head lights - or is that just my imagination going astray?

Ecclestone confirms Indian GP for 2010

Bernie Ecclestone has now confirmed officially that a deal has been struck to bring formula one to the world’s second most populous country, India. It was reported earlier on Thursday that F1 chiefs had penned a contract with Indian company JP Associates to build a circuit just outside capital city New Delhi.

Ecclestone, 77, clarified that the contract is with JPSK Sports Private Ltd, a subsidiary of JP Associates, to stage the first Indian grand prix in 2010. “India has always been known for its love of cricket, but F1 has been growing hugely in popularity in recent years as the viewing figures would suggest,” Ecclestone said on Thursday.

“Now with Vijay Mallya’s team, Force India, and the news that Karun Chandhok could soon be driving in F1, the announcement of the future grand prix in India will spark an explosion of further interest to rival that of the traditional sport,” he added.

The local newspaper Hindustan Times also claims formula one bosses have signed a deal with a company to build a circuit just outside of New Delhi.
The company, JP Associates, is therefore now contracted to develop the site about 50km to the east of the capital for an inaugural Indian grand prix in 2010, a senior executive suggested.

Singapore GP Will Use Digital Flags

In Singapore, work is at such an advanced stage on the new Formula One race track that officials reckon by the time September 2008 rolls around, all will be ready for the rumble. Best of all, the lighting situation got a boost from the introduction of electronic flag displays. Coloured flags used by race officials to communicate with the drivers will be in action as digital displays as well.

Better for information control is the fact that info will be centralized, and therefore the race director will know exactly what is going on on different parts of the circuit. There will be 35 display panels all around the circuit and supplement hand-held flags. It will be the first time Digiflag technology is used in F1, after years of research and development.

By late May the service road and paddock tunnel, a new track section in front of the pit building will be completed. The lighting system, which is absolutely vital for the night race, is being installed in stages. Curiously the lights look to be only on one side of the track for most of it, but that could yet change. Sixteen lighting projectors were installed and tested last week on a 64-metre stretch. On this stretch or the rest of it, the cars will be doing about 260km/h. Illumination from the 1,500 projectors will be up to four times higher than that of a football stadium for example. Thus expect some really bright sparks in September.
