Faced with the prospect of missing a family flight back to Switzerland as his taxi journey to the airport became bogged down in traffic, Michael Schumacher is reported to have taken the decision that all self-respecting former F1 World Champions have to take: I'll drive.

According to reports, Schumacher took the wheel last week when he realised that he was likely to miss a flight out of Germany.

Cabbie Tuncer Yilmaz took the role of passenger as Schumacher explored the full capabilities of his Opel Vivaro (top speed163kmh/101mph).

"It was crazy having Schumi driving, with me in the passenger seat," the taxi driver told the German press.

"He drove at full throttle around the corners and overtook in some unbelievable places."

Arriving at the airport in good time for the flight, Schumi is then said to have rewarded the stunned cabbie with a 100 euro tip.

So retirement hasn't stop Schumacher from racing at all.

full throttle at curves? LoL!

that report was splashed all over my local dailies here. what a lucky cabbie!

That sounds great... :D ...especially the fact that it was an Opel Vivaro makes it even more brilliant!!

I saw the youtube video of him signing autographs at the airport. He comes back down the stairs of his plane to give the cabbie the tip! Here it is.

He was flying on a private plane, so why was he worried that he would miss the flight? It looks like he has more than one plane. He flew in a Pilatus PC-12, but usually he has the much larger Falcon 2000EX that costs something like $26 million U.S.

here's 3 of his planes, and one custom made Harley, which Harley Davidson did specially for MS for his 7th WDC.

I was wondering where you were...

Hi, chonkoa! I haven't logged in much lately because my relatively new computer has gone ballistic. All of a sudden and without warning my PC went crazy. It got to the point where I could not log in even in safe mode. I re-installed and it boots up again, but most of my programs don't work! Whenever I try to open a program, I get the cryptic "program has stopped working" message. It's driving me insane, so I haven't posted much even despite Schu's return to testing, the new spy scandal and Alonso signing.

Remy, the first two planes are no longer owned by Schu. They have been sold. The plane in the third picture is the Dassault Falcon 2000EX. It replaced the red and white plane in picture two, which was a Dassault Falcon 2000. I saw in the youtube video that he also flies a Pliatus PC-12, which in itself is a $3 million plane!

Even with a private plane you have taking of landing times you have to follow. Can't take off when ever you want, and hiring a pilot isn't free either. When it comes to private flights time is money!

It's good to see your post again mate.:t-cheers:
Good luck with the computer.

It depends on the airport. Actually, many small airports that serve business and private jets pretty much do allow you to reschedule takeoffs when you please. I know someone with a Learjet 35 and when his business meeting went on longer than expected and he'll be late for a flight, all it takes is a simple phone call to the control tower and that's it. He won't have to drive like a maniac to make his flight because the airport will happily give him a new runway slot and time. It might not even cost him more for his pilots because his guys are paid only if they are operating in-flight and not if they waiting on the tarmac.

I'm a huge Schu fan, but I think this story reeks of publicity. You own a private jet is to avoid things like this. It's a great story and a nice video, but I think it's been embellished. When I first read it, I thought what the hell is he doing flying commercial? His plane wasn't exactly going to leave without him.

The story is everywhere and like you said it's rather peculiar since private jets don't involve check-ins and other time consuming steps.

Looking at the video he's taking off from a very small airport and will probably land at a very small airport too, and signing autographs most likely consumed the time he gain speeding in the Opel.

Then again everyone has their reasons for rushing when they really don't have to.
