S-Class S-Class Before and After Facelift ...

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class, formerly known as Sonderklasse, is a series of full-sized top-of-the-line luxury sedans and coupés produced by Mercedes-Benz. Officially introduced in 1972 with the W116, it has remained in use ever since.
Lol...How is it that the S-class "MUST" have the AMG package to look good? The 7 series on the other and is suppose to be good with or without the M package?

S-class just look the best with AMG package. New 7-series looks stunning without M-package, also the M-package for 7-series looks like a mess.

^ Nice!

Mercedes use to put very bland looking bumpers to their cars, as the new E-Class or the S-Class (both FL and pre-FL) so the AMG pack just fix this.

The new F01 7er looks very good without the M Pack because its bumpers are more agressive than the S-Class ones. However, the front bumper of the 7er is not my cup of tea, and specially on light colours doesn´t look specially fine, and the M Pack front bumper looks much better.

On the contrary, the rear bumper of the M Pack F01 is a mess, the chrome looks so bad on it.

It really depends on how you look at it. The S-class looks flawless either way IMO same goes for people who see it one the street who don't know about all the AMG package options.

The Pre-facelift model had a sophisticated look about it. that it really didn't have to have the sport package to get noticed. It did not look dull. A sedan in this segment doesn't have to be sporty.

The sport package is nice and brings it out more, but it is not a MUST which is why most S-classes don't have it.

Even from the side it looks good and looks like a flagship car as it should. Even the facelift model use of LED still make it seem even more elegant, which is what the S-class is all about.

Looks good without the AMG package.

This S-Class has been a mess in some ways. I´m convinced we will see a W222 with more organic shapes, a true MB like rear lights, a better designed interior, and a more agressive front end. And specially, I have faith in that we will see a slimmer glass house too, you´ll see.

A Mess? This is like the best looking SEDAN on earth IMO. Flowers grow when this car even passes them on the street. This car is flawless in everyway pre-facelift and facelift model. Seems like it's sales prove that.

I loved the W126, W140 and W220....but the W221 is freakin remarkable in every aspect. The interior is outstanding with the highest quality materials applied. The exterior has "BOSS" written all over it. You should see how MAGNIFICENT it is just setting in traffic around other lower models who could never compare.

The S-class is the best thing since break bread...it's even more thrilling then the discovery of electricity.

Just look at it -

The engine just breaths excellence. We can only HOPE that the W222 lives up to W221.

Don´t get me wrong, It´s a true beautty, specially that one you´ve posted, but this W221 has influence of Maybach, and has some type of different style of interior, more like the E65 7er than Benz-like. This is what I am refering to.

And, again, I´m convinced the next S-Class will have a much more cohesive design.

As long as it doesn't look like an oversize E-class, then I am fine.

I will take note of this post. If you stay here in the comming years, I will see with you how different the new S-Class will be from the W212 E-Class.

Lol...Like I said...If it comes out looking like the E-class (Boxy) then I will be canceling my Mercedes-Benz Fan Club membership. Then I will take several sleeping pills and have my body shipped to Mercedes-Benz headquarters with a AUDI tattoo on my chest.

^^ Shallow fan???

For the pre-facelift version only! I think the fornt bumper design of the non AMG pack of the pre facelift is ugly, and those foglights even worse. The AMG pack fixes that, and makes the front very handsome imo...

I actually like both. Guess it depends on the person.

Shallow who?

Facelifted car is the one, pre-facelift is still gorgeous though. Still though IMO, the best time to buy a Mercedes is at the facelift. New features, bugs are taken out, and sometimes new engines, too bad they didn't do that this time with the S-Class. Not that the S550 needs it. I'm really curious to see how the hybrid will test in the mags and out in the real world mileage wise. The battle between the S400 and the LS600hL is pending I'm sure.

Unlike with the W211 E-Class you can't go wrong with getting either version of the S-Class as I wouldn't touch a pre-fl W211 E-Class.

M

Actually the '05 and especially '06 W211's got about on par with F.L's in terms of quality, and much of the mechanics, all drivetrain, and options, etc. of the '06's were the same as well. Biggest difference is SBC, which is enough to stay away from on its own really, although it's a big plus all negative aspect/s aside.

I like the F.L, but the rear of the pre F.L is MUCH nicer and more unique. Obviously I love the W211, but the F.L W221's butt looks a kinda like a pre-F.L W211's at first glance, which is cool and all as again I love the W211 and its rear, but just not as "exclusive" as the pre-F.L W221's.

Also I think the W212's sharp-angled rear-view mirrors are a big no no for this car, don't flow with the design and not as fancy and elegant. Probably a cost saving measure as they're the corporate/generic mirrors now. It is nice that they're fully painted unlike the E's, with it's black areas.

Besides that the F.L W221 is a win, and I LOVE that they added that much needed extra wood on the lower console, as the W221's interior is a bit bare IMO.

I'd like to see both AMG Packaged versions next to each other. BTW, THANKS O/P for posting these!! I love comparison side-by-side pics!!

I agree. I love the W221, but it is a bit messy in some areas, and a smidge unrefined in design in my eyes here and there. Not as bad as the W212 in that regard, but just not perfect to me. M-B used to make perfect-ish designs for their era's, but at the same time, didn't try and take so many chances with the different gimmicks here and there.

I think they will go for the cohesive and organic vibe with the new S, whether they pull it off and beat out the W221's overall design is another story.

I will say, I was looking into buying a W221 recently (decided to happily keep my E instead, as I can't justify enough of a difference to command the extra money I'd be shelling out, and again, DO love the 221, but can't completely fall in love with it), and wouldn't even consider a non AMG Package.... Then again, I wouldn't buy any M-B without an AMG Package.

As far as overall design, I gotta go with the F01, the proportions of that car are FLAWLESS and clean (except the LWB looks awkward and weird a bit).

Just look at these pictures for comparison on the overall shape and cohesion::

I think the pre-FL is great, it even looks more special than the FL. The FL does, however, feel a bit more nouveau...

I've seen facelifted S-class IRL and its not much of change, only the enthusiast will spot the differences. The rear looks much better on pre-facelift.

For me, the FL looks way better. While the differences may be hard to tell for a non-expert, the car has much more presence thanks to the bigger grille and sharper headlights.
The rear looks way cleaner and lighter, and by night it looks stunning. Colors seems more shiny too.

The wooden center console is extremely welcomed too.

This is for me as important an FL as the W211 in its time. Must-have.

S-class just look the best with AMG package. New 7-series looks stunning without M-package, also the M-package for 7-series looks like a mess.

I agere, but the AMG-package is not at all as needed on the S-class as it is on the CL-class.

^That sport package on the new S looks good in black. GBOY, I guess you might be trading in soon. ;)

I just went to the MB dealer in Tysons on Saturday. Lot full of people looking at the new E-class. Might have to go out to Arlington though. Looks like they have a larger inventory.

I have peeps in all those places ... let me know if you want a deal :)
BTW I was going to do black initially but when I parked them side by side, I went with silver cos the SP stood out a lot more. (i.e. in 07)

^Thanks! :usa7uh:

I agree the sport package really stands out and looks more detailed in the Silver. Black seems so "Boss" like on a Benz, I just love it. White S-classes don't look bad either.

Honestly, you have the best package S-class 550/4matic/Sport package. Doesn't get better then that. It would be nice if Mercedes-Benz would offer the 4Matic on the S600 though.

I actually saw a guess with a W220 with W221 rear lights. Those body stripes were so nice and had a sporty hint to them. Still like the new ones though. Either way the S-class prefacelift or facelift looks good.
