P1 [Rumors] New F1-Inspired Hybrid McLaren Hypercar Reportedly Coming in 2026! (P1 replacement!) and Saloon/SUV!

The McLaren P1 (codenamed P12) is a flagship sports car produced by McLaren Automotive. It is the second installment in McLaren's Ultimate Series after the McLaren F1. Considered to be the spiritual successor to the F1, the P1 was one of the first high performance sports cars to be introduced incorporating hybrid technology; the Porsche 918 Spyder having begun taking orders prior to the P1 and the LaFerrari introduced alongside it.

'McLaren is planning to launch a new Formula 1-inspired flagship supercar with two seats and a lightweight hybrid system, an unnamed source who attended a recent global dealer meeting at the company's Woking, England headquarters told Automotive News.

Shown above, the F1-inspired McLaren P1 hybrid.

The car will use an in-house developed V-8 engine paired to a hybrid system that's 70 percent lighter than the current technology out today, the source told Autonews. The source also said the car will have a new carbon fiber monocoque with integrated back seats, similar to an F1 car, added to improve rigidity and cut weight.

McLaren also confirmed its first utility vehicle at the dealer event, according to Autonews' source. Referring to the brand's next car, director of product strategy Jamie Corstorphine reportedly told the crowd "Stay tuned. It may have four doors and four seats." The vehicle is reportedly set to arrive in 2028.

CEO Michael Leiters confirmed in November McLaren's plans to move into the "lifestyle" sector with a new product line, but stopped short of revealing the vehicle as an SUV or a more low-slung sedan. Either way, Leiters is the man for the job, as he was instrumental in developing the original Porsche Cayenne and the Ferrari Purosangue, utility vehicles sold by traditionally exotic manufacturers."

It was always going to happen the Mclaren Ultimate Series cars are far too lucrative not to produce so they've definitely started the pre production prototype processes as it's only a couple of years away.

Also a "four door four seater" further on in 2028.

Very interesting! And obviously McLaren Artura Spiders and the "LT' versions too, they'll be very busy indeed!🙂

McLaren Planning New, Lighter Hybrid System For Upcoming F1-Inspired Hypercar!

The future hybrid unit will weigh 70 percent less than its existing system, and will be paired to a NEW V8 (<what?)

McLaren will continue to hone its hybrid systems with its next flagship hypercar. The automaker plans to develop a new electrification system that will be lighter and deliver better performance for drivers.

The new powertrain will be made up of an in-house developed V8 engine that is attached to a new hybrid unit. The electric components will weigh about 70 percent less than its current generation system, and will deliver its power directly to the transmission, two dealers in attendance at a recent global retailer meeting told Automotive News.

The powertrain will go into a new, Formula One-inspired, two-seater hypercar that will fit into McLaren‘s “Ultimate Series.” The powertrain will be connected to a newly developed carbon fiber monocoque with integrated seat backs.

That should provide the car with better rigidity and improved safety, while also cutting weight. Meanwhile, new dihedral doors, 3D printed suspension parts, and an F1-inspired aerodynamics concept should all help it perform on track and impress on the road.

Although reports suggest that McLaren will develop EVs, it doesn’t yet believe that the technology is ready for its vehicles, the dealers said.

“McLaren doesn’t feel EV technology is there,” a dealer commented. “It’s an answer, but it’s not the answer.”

In addition to the hybrid, McLaren also hinted to dealers that a larger luxury model is on its way. The dealers claimed that the automaker plans to break into a new class with a vehicle that has four seats, and as many doors.

Whether that will be a sedan or an SUV remains to be seen, but it is worth noting that McLaren’s new CEO, Michael Leiters, was previously involved in the development of the Porsche Cayenne and the Ferrari Purosangue.

The four-door vehicle isn’t expected to arrive for a few years, though. The timeline provided to dealers was that the new four-seater will launch in 2028, while the new hybrid hypercar is expected to be introduced in 2026."

So News is beginning to leak out and the technical specifications are too. But a NEW V8? Can't see that at all maybe a through overall perhaps OR they may use Judd as they did for the McLaren Solus GT and the V10. Naturally aspirated? I doubt it!

I am super excited that they will have a new V8 combined with a super light hybrid powertrain, I guess we could expect the next model to be called 850S.

Yes information is still relatively new but it did surprise some people because the V6 was said to be staple. But yeah let's see what transpires!

Electric McLaren P1 successor tipped for launch by 2030

McLaren CEO said hypercar must be comparable to V8 750S; won't have 2000bhp or weigh 2000kg!

The long-awaited successor to the McLaren P1 is set to use electric power when it launches at the end of the decade.

Since the P1 was launched in 2012, the firm has frequently said through various different managements that there would need to be a step-change in technology for a successor to follow. McLaren has launched several hypercars since the P1, including the Senna, Speedtail, Elva and Solus GT, but none has been in the same lineage as the 1992 F1 and P1.

However, developments now, and ongoing over the rest of the decade, in battery-electric drivetrains make such a model more likely than it has ever been.

When asked if a model at the very top of the McLaren range was in the works to rival the likes of the all-electric Porsche Mission X, Porsche’s own successor to the P1-rivalling 918 Spyder, company boss Michael Leiters said: “We’re quite busy, yes.” Leiters detailed EVs as one of three pillars of powertrain development for McLaren, alongside internal combustion engines and hybrids, which will grow over the next five years to make up 90% of McLaren sales by that point.

As it stands, Leiters said the firm was “not sure” on electric supercars.

“The main reason for that is weight. We don’t want to make a car that is 2000kg and 2000hp – anybody can do that. That’s not in the DNA of McLaren.

"We want to make a car that is comparable to the 750 weight-wise; we don’t need 2000hp. We’re working on concepts for that, we’re exploring that and we have really exciting ideas around that. But it has to outperform what we do on an ICE.”

‘Outperform’ refers to not only the pure power output or performance figures but also the way the car handles and its agility. McLaren also expects a technology change for EVs not only in their capabilities but also in their ability to be exciting to drive and to fit within the brand’s DNA.

Leiters expected such an electric car to be ready “maybe at the end of the decade”. On the positioning of what that electric car would be – hypercar or supercar – Leiters said: “In general, I think the best way to introduce a new technology is top down.” That hints at potential for any innovative lightweighting measures and battery hardware to trickle down into the Woking firm’s more ‘mainstream’ line-up.

However, while McLaren is investigating electric cars, it is doing so without customer demand for them yet, as Leiters revealed when asked if any McLaren owners had asked for an EV. “No, but we have to be careful,” he said. “Times are changing and we have to prepare for new times. The success of the 750S shows our customers love ICE cars, but maybe there are other customers and they’re interested in other stuff.”

More broadly, he welcomed the EU’s proposal to allow cars powered by e-fuels to stay on sale as he doubts there is one technology to cover all use cases.

“For a use case like we have, low volume and low mileage, you have to invest so much in the emissions in the production of an electric vehicle. How can we recover that in our lifecycle? It doesn’t make sense, right? So I think it’s very important to always consider the environment and the circumstances in which you are making decisions.”

New McLaren V8 hybrid in the works

McLaren has revealed plans to introduce a new line of V8 hybrid sports cars before launching any pure-electric models.

The marque announced earlier this year that it had renewed its partnership with Sussex-based engine supplier Ricardo to build a new-generation V8 engine to form the basis for an electrified drivetrain that will feature in “lightweight, high-performance hybrid supercars”.

The introduction of a new V8 hybrid system – developed in-house at Woking – raises the tantalising prospect of a successor to the 250mph Speedtail, which pairs the 750S’s eight-cylinder engine with an electric motor for a combined 1055bhp, but the firm has given no further details of the performance potential of its new powertrains."

The V8 in the V8 Hybrid cars is still the same Ricardo-developed engine or are they using a different V8 engine?

It'll definitely be a Ricardo OEM collaboration but the forthcoming V8 engine I've seen stated as completely brand new ground up on design apparently sharing nothing with the current units.
