2012 Audi RS7 may reach for the 600 horsepower mark to outdo the next BMW F10 M5

Could Audi really go all the way with the RS7 and leave behind the competition in the horsepower wars?
According to American car magazine Road & Track, rumor has it that Audi may be working on a 600 bhp (608 PS / 447 kW) RS7 performance variant of the A7. Under the bonnet would come a twin-turbo 4.0 liter V8 engineered to deliver that level of output.
That power quotient would surpass the expected output of the next BMW M5 (F10) which will come with a 4.4 liter-twin-turbo V8 producing 570 hp (425 kW / 578 PS).
To handle all that power, the RS7 will feature Audi's all-wheel drive Quattro system with a torque vectoring differential. The RS7 will also come with an adaptive suspension, larger front air intakes and 19 and 20-inch wheels.
The 2012 Audi RS7 is expected to debut late next year.

the s7 has'nt even debut and their talking about an rs7 debuting next year:t-hands:.I'll believe it when I see it.
 
600hp from a twin turbo 4.0L V8 engine! That's insane.

It bodes well for Bentley also as the engine is destined for the Continental GT next year. For the Bentley 500hp will be enough. It's the torque that matters.
 
140 HP per liter engine displacement appears to be the output level deemed "appropriate" for the VW-Groups' high performance powerplants. That would amount to the 4.0 TSFI in RS guise producing 550-560 HP. Squeezing another 40-50 HP should not be difficult.

In any event, the RS 7 will be an absolute halo car for Audi. An object to showcase the companys' technical prowess when it comes to internal combustion engines, sophisticated torque-vectored 4WD configurations, etc. Suitable for commanding bragging rights and perhaps offering a bit of trickle-down pizzazz for the more "lowly" A7 models.

All mentioned above aside, it's a car that will be exciting. And patently superfluous with regard to all things other than image.

I'm not sure, but the engine may suffer reliability issues. But hats off to the Audi engineers for having the balls to make it, if it's true.

Not in the slightest, let me explain.

S3/TT-S/Golf R/Scirocco R : 2.0L (265-272hp) = 132.5 - 136hp/L
RS3/TT-RS : 2.5L (340hp) = 136hp/L
QS Concept : 2.5L (408hp) = 163.2hp/L

Poverty will confirm that 450hp for the TT-RS is prefectly reliable and that is 180hp/L.

The issue isn't the hp but how much torque it will develop compared to it's rivals.
 
^ I don't think anyone is claiming that this will happen but the output of 600ps does sounded like the most logical requirement to compete with the 580ps M5.

In case anyone was wondering about the origins of the 4.0v8TFSI, it's adapted from the 5.0v10TFSI, i.e the one fitted to the last RS6, so it's fair to assume that if the DSG housing fits the 4.0TFSI then it will also pair up to the 5.0TFSI.

It's all about rev's and the turbo boost pressure. Turbochargers are still not known for their longevity. For this engine, I think variable geometery turbochargers will be used in order to produce the boost required and to minimize lag.

It's not really accurate to compare small capacity 4 or 5 cylinder engines with a large capacity V8 engine. The physical and cooling demands are much higher.

BMW are asking 131hp/L from their M5 and this is a revolutionary turbo configuration where the turbos sit between the vee, my guess is BMW have much more to worry about regarding heat than Audi would, even with their engine producing a little more hp/L.

If you really want to talk hp/L then look no further than Porsche and their mighty GT2RS, I think you concerns are well and truly covered by all the brands. :usa7uh:
 
I believe you're not the only person wondering what the heck he's doing in that clownsuit.

I reckon Stefan Sielaff is another one of those excentric designers who enjoy indulging in sartorial extravagance. I actually recall reading somewhere that the red trousers deal originates in England-to be worn with a dark blue blazer only at special events such as Ascot, Beauleiu, university rowing events and other things remotely nautical, etc. Whatever.

Magic photoshop, incidentally ! I actually thought to myself: "Wow, that really came out of nowhere !! Audi has just presented the RS7 when no one expected it !"
