RUF Ruf BTR vs. CTR

Ruf Automobile GmbH (stylized as RUF) is a German car manufacturer. Formerly using Porsche bodies in white to build cars, today they build vehicles on their own bodies and chassis. They also manufacture performance parts for various Porsche models, including the 911, Boxster, and Cayman. The company rose to fame when in 1987, its Porsche-derived CTR reached 211 mph, surpassing the Ferrari F40's claimed top speed of 201 mph. Official website: RUF Automobile

I am currently busy putting test data from old 'auto motor sport' magazines into a nice database. While doing that I noticed that the BTR 3.4 (of which I knew very little before) and the Carrera Turbo basically the same car only that the latter is using the Carrera body, whereas the BTR uses a broader Turbo body. Is that correct or are there other differences as well?

And is this 'Carrera Turbo Ruf' the first stage of what would later be the famous CTR a.k.a. Yellowbird with 469 bhp?

RUF Porsche Carrera Turbo that you refer to above is called "RUF BTR 3.4 Coupe - Lightweight" in the Marc Bongers book Porsche and RUF -Sportscars. It was made between 1983 and 1989 whereas the RUF BTR 3.4 mentioned above was made between 1987 and 1989.

Apparently there were some minor differences like the battery and the lightweight version between 1986-1989 had wider wheels and tires than the heavier version:

Lightweight BTR
-----------------
9J x 17/10J x 17 (wheels)
235/40 VR 17/255/40 VR 17 (tires)

BTR
--------
8J x 17/9J x 17 (wheels)
215/45 VR 17/235/40 VR 17 (tires)

Also, the lightweight version never had a RUF 6 speed while the regular BTR 3.4 had a 6-speed in 1989.

Both above had CIS whereas the CTR had Motronic so I would say the CTR was a substantially different car.
