Thanks to a lineup chock full of fuel-efficient entries at economical sticker prices, Volkswagen is one of the few automakers to see a sales volume increase this year over last in the United States. The German manufacturer hopes that its new CC — the initials stand for Comfort Coupe (note to car manufacturers: Please stop calling 4-doors "coupes" unless you start offering "2-door sedans" as well) — will help sway cost-conscious consumers away from the Camry and Accord. And its 31-mpg highway EPA rating and upscale interior should help.

Visually, the CC is a big departure from the company's current design theme. While the side character line that runs from the front to rear fenders apes the sheet-metal crease on other vehicles including the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW's 3 Series, the rear styling is radically different from anything these companies offer. The long rear window meets a very abruptly-ending, short decklid. And the taillights not only wrap around the corners of the car but protrude outward slightly for additional interest. Some on the press introduction found the overall rear treatment awkward- or ungainly-looking; personally, I find it interesting and fresh.
