Vienna, Austria — In May of this year, a new CLS will begin appearing in your local Mercedes-Benz dealership. You'll be forgiven, though, if you don't recognize it as new; the 2009 CLS looks a lot like the 2008 car, with a few subtle changes that don't detract from the beautiful lines of this E-Class-based sedan with the coupelike roof.
The changes begin with a new grille that now has two lateral slats instead of four. And in back, there are slightly revised taillights, a reshaped bumper cap and exhaust outlets that are trapezoidal in shape, not oval. Completing the aesthetic changes are slightly larger side mirrors with integrated arrow-shaped turn signals, plus new 5-spoke 18-in. wheels. That's about all.
And inside, the changes are similarly minor. A 3-spoke steering wheel is the newest bit, complemented by chronometer-style gauges now finished in white with silver backgrounds. And the latest COMAND system is on duty, with Bluetooth allowing for hands-free control of the driver's phone and the CLS's standard 12-speaker Harman Kardon digital surround sound stereo.
Two models remain available: the CLS550 with the 5.5-liter V-8, and our favorite, the CLS63 AMG. This model is powered by AMG's hand-built 6.2-liter V-8, which sends 507 bhp to the rear wheels via a 7-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. Shifts are exceptionally crisp and quick, and the rev-matching downshifts remind you that this 4-place sedan has some serious intentions. And as you'd expect, the sport-tuned Airmatic suspension, with variably damped gas-filled shock absorbers, is up to the task on twisty roads, as are the brakes, which feature giant 14.2-in. front rotors and monstrous 6-piston calipers.
