Renault and Daimler extend EV pact

According to the Stuttgarter Zeitung, Renault and Daimler have reached a new deal under which Renault will develop electric motors for smart and Twingo models, while Daimler will supply batteries.

Herbert Kohler, head of Daimler's E-Drive and Future Mobility unit, noted recently that Daimler predicts a significant decline in the costs for EV batteries in the future, saying: "A few years ago, the price was at about €1,500 per kilowatt hour for a lithium-ion battery. In the mid-term we should be at a level of €400."

DAIMLER will supply engines to Infiniti

PARIS (Dow Jones) - German automaker Daimler AG will supply engines and parts to Nissan Motor Co. for its luxury brand Infiniti, La Tribune reported Monday, quoting Francois Bancon, director of advanced product of the Japanese group.

Daimler will provide Infiniti with four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines from the Mercedes C-class as part of the alliance the three tied last year, the manager told the newspaper.

Daimler will also deliver six-cylinder diesel engines, which replace those made by Renault, as the French manufacturer decided to stop production at its facility in Cleon, due to low volumes, the article says.

I think it's a good moves, increases scale-economy by making more engines. Sure, I'd liked Mercedes to keep everything above 4-pot for themselves, but I'm not against that sharing.

I'm much more concerned about the rumoured Aston-Martin sitting on a W222 S-Class platform than about seeing a Merc engine under an Infinity's bonnet to be honest.

Daimler in Renault-Nissan fuel-cell talks

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - German automaker Daimler is talking to partners and Nissan Motor about working together on fuel cell technology, its head of R&D told Reuters in an interview.

"Fuel cell technology is also electric so it could make a lot of sense to join forces also in this field," Thomas Weber, board member for research and development at the maker of Mercedes-Benz and Smart cars, said at the Shanghai auto show.

Daimler in Renault-Nissan fuel-cell talks

German automaker Daimler is talking to partners and Nissan Motor about working together on fuel cell technology, its head of R&D told Reuters in an interview. “Fuel cell technology is also electric so it could make a lot of sense to join forces also in this field,” Thomas Weber, board member for research and development at the maker of Mercedes-Benz and Smart cars, said at the Shanghai auto show.

“We are really concretely discussing this topic,” he said. Renault, Nissan and Daimler signed a deal a year ago to swap small stakes in each other and jointly develop cars in a tie-up they said at the time could lead to combined savings of 4 billion euros ($5.8 billion) over five years.

Partnerships are essential in the car industry, as players struggle to stay ahead of new technology developments and emissions-cutting legislation, and teaming up allows them to share costs and risk.

“We are in a concrete product development phase, so therefore we are discussing concrete projects on the fuel cell side, bundling resources so that we could come faster to the market,” Weber said.

The partners could work together on the “stacks” where energy is produced inside the fuel cell, Weber added.

“The idea could be based on a lot of knowledge on all sides of the alliance to find these components where we can join forces, harmonise technologies,” he said, adding the move would help to cut down initial costs when the technology was launched.

Weber said fuel-cell cars could become a reality for the mass market by 2015. “The technology is there — in 2015 latest we will start volume production.”

Weber said pure electric vehicle technology would definitely be needed too to meet tightening emissions legislation, but that the advantages of fuel-cell technology were its shorter charging time, longer range and need for fewer charging stations in each market.

Renault and Nissan are betting heavily on electric vehicle technology, jointly investing 4 billion euros in EVs as part of their long-standing alliance. Nissan’s electric Leaf is already on sale while Renault is due to launch its first electric models later this year.

Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche had earlier told journalists the three car makers were looking at ways to cooperate beyond the projects they set out when they signed their deal, and could use the partnership to help electric vehicle component sourcing.

The groups are on track with their initial plans to cooperate, which included small cars and engines, Zetsche said.

Manager Magazin

Daimler, Renault in talks on EV batteries-source

FRANKFURT – Daimler AG and Renault SA are planning to extend their partnership to batteries for electric cars, a person familiar with the matter said.

The two automakers are currently in talks over a battery tie-up, which would see the French company enter into Daimler's Li-Tec battery joint venture with Evonik, the person told Reuters on Thursday.

The two carmakers are discussing technical requirements and will begin talks with chemicals group Evonik once these are clear, the person said.

Renault, also in partnership with Japanese car maker Nissan Motor Co., already cooperates with Daimler on small cars such as the Smart and Twingo under a stake-swap and development deal announced in April 2010.

They said at the time they were discussing cooperation on EVs. Carmakers are increasingly joining forces with chemical groups to develop batteries for electric cars in order to meet stricter environmental regulations and attract fuel-conscious consumers.

U.S. carmakers General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler said in March that they will work together with a Samsung and Robert Bosch partnership, in order to develop high-energy lithium-ion batteries.

Daimler has also expressed an interest in involving Japanese electronics group NEC in its Li-Tec venture, Germany's Manager Magazin reported earlier on Thursday. Nissan already runs a lithium-ion battery joint venture with NEC, called AESC.

Daimler and Evonik declined to comment on the report. Renault and Nissan could not immediately be reached.

CORRECT: Daimler: No Plan To Share Two-Seater Model In Alliance

FRANKFURT (Dow Jones)--Germany's Daimler AG said Sunday that it wasn't planning to share its two-seater Smart Fortwo model within the auto maker's three-way cooperation with Renault SA and the French firm's Japanese alliance partner Nissan Motor Co.

A spokeswoman for Daimler said there was no plan to build a two-seater car based on the Fortwo under a brand other than the Smart nameplate. German weekly Automobilwoche indicated in a report published this weekend that such a move was considered as part of the possible cooperation projects.

In April 2010, Renault, Nissan and Daimler announced a three-way alliance to share technology and components in the fiercely competitive small-car segment to benefit from economies of scale. The cooperation projects include the next-generation of Daimler's Smart Fortwo and Renault's Twingo model, including electric versions. It is also planned to launch additional Twingo versions and to expand the product portfolio of Daimler's Smart minicar brand, for example with a four-door vehicle.

Renault and Daimler could also produce electric vehicles

The cooperation between the French car maker Renault and Daimler could be expanded to include the production of electric vehicles.

Renault COO Carlos Tavares said on Monday that while there is currently no decision on a possible expansion of the cooperation, there are talks to examine a possible expansion. The relationship with Daimler is so good that this issue could be discussed.

In April 2010, Daimler and Renault-Nissan formed an alliance for the production of small cars. Among other goals, concerning Daimler, Renault-Nissan Motors smaller models, while Daimler is to deliver large gasoline and diesel engines for Nissan's luxury Infiniti brand, it was said at the time.

Daimler Chairman Dieter Zetsche had said that the company could also expand their alliance to electric vehicles.

I don't really care about how they do the electric/green stuff, as I'm sure it's all and well, and more lucrative and necessary for both companies.

I just hope that M-B doesn't give their future E-Class/etc. platforms to Nissan (as was previously reported), and noticeable bits and pieces don't start being shared between both. I'd probably jump ship if that happened.

Mercedes-Benz, Infiniti plan to share B-Class platform

By: Greg Kable on 9/13/2011

Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler and its alliance partner Renault-Nissan have signed off on an extension to their existing part-sharing agreement that will see the Infiniti brand use the Mercedes-Benz MFA (modular front architecture) small-car platform that underpins the redesigned B-class as the basis of a new crossover vehicle scheduled to go on sale in 2014.

The platform-sharing agreement, expected to be made public at a joint Daimler and Renault-Nissan press conference planned for theFrankfurt motor show on Sept. 14, follows an earlier deal for four-cylinder and V6 diesel engines developed and produced by Mercedes-Benz to be used in the Infiniti M sedan.

Previewed by the Etherea concept at the Geneva motor show in March, the new Infiniti crossover has been developed primarily for sale in Europe, although sources involved in the Daimler and Renault/Nissan alliance have indicated to Autoweek that there also are plans to market the new five-seater in North America.

An Infiniti insider revealed to Autocar magazine that initial proposals for the crossover were based on the same platform as the second-generation Nissan Qashqai but said the alliance between Renault/Nissan and Daimler had opened up an opportunity to use more premium underpinnings that provide a better base in terms of noise, vibration and harshness, rigidity and production flexibility.

The MFA platform, which is earmarked to underpin a whole range of upcoming Mercedes-Benz models--including the new third-generation A-class, the CLC sedan, the CLC shooting brake and the GLC small SUV--also provides the choice between standard front- and optional four-wheel drive.

As well as sharing the same platform as a range of new Mercedes-Benz models, the Infiniti crossover also is expected to be powered by a range of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines engineered jointly by Mercedes-Benz and Renault/Nissan.

Details on a production site for the new Infiniti model remain scarce, although Infiniti sources suggest that the new car will be assembled in Europe. Plans are also been studied to establish a site in North America for the production of MFA-based models, although it remains unclear just what models are expected to hail from the plant.

Nissan confirms use of Mercedes-Benz platform for Infiniti car

Infiniti's new small car will be based on the platform used by the Mercedes-Benz B-class, shown.

By: Automotive News Europe on 9/14/2011

Infiniti, Nissan's luxury brand, plans to build a compact car based on the MFA small-car platform from Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said.

The new model will mark an expansion of the cooperation between Daimler and the Renault-Nissan alliance, Ghosn said at the Frankfurt auto show on Wednesday.

Nissan did not comment on reports that the car would be built in Europe where it will challenge the Audi A3 and BMW 1 series.

Infiniti needs a compact car in Europe to compete with entry-level models from Audi and BMW, Nissan executive vice president Andy Palmer told Automotive News Europe in an interview at the auto show on Wednesday.

He said the Infiniti vehicle will launch in 2014 with gasoline and diesel engines, based largely on the Etherea concept that the brand unveiled at the Geneva auto show in March and is showing again in Frankfurt.

The compact would likely eventually account for about 40 percent of Infiniti's European sales, Palmer said.

Ghosn's remarks came at a joint press conference with Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG.

Zetsche said "there is extremely limited cross consideration" comparing Mercedes and Infiniti brands among buyers shopping for upscale cars.

So far, the companies are cooperating to explore electric versions of the Mercedes Smart car and the Renault Twingo, as well as a small delivery van based on Renault architecture.

Zetsche said the companies' cooperative efforts are based on practical projects, and thus differ from the disastrous Daimler-Chrysler alliance of the last decade.

As long as the E-Class won't be sharing its platform with the next G Series (like rumor had said before), then it's all good with me if they do it with the low-end, FWD models.

I don't mind when it comes to platforms, engines and transmissions. These are expensive items and the greater economies of scale would justify even more R&D into these areas, meaning better outcomes.

Eni noted in another thread that the BMW 7er platform was compromised in terms of weight saving technology because of cost. If MB can avoid this on a model like an E or S by selling the platform to Infiniti, who's worried?

The other aspects of the vehicles will undoubtedly be entirely different. They'll be no confusing Infinitis and MB's, that's for sure.
