Real versus advertised acceleration times

Hello! Thanks for the results!
Just a few questions:
How many km does your car have in total?
What did you do about the running-in period? What was the max rpm for how many km?

I was always imagining that car manufacturers were conservative about acceleration numbers - giving a "guaranteed" acceleration figure that anyone could reach under normal conditions.

I really wonder how they obtain 4,6 sec in tests...

Anyway, thanks for the details, and let me know when you post the video.
Cheers!

Hello again @peterleo,
managed to upload some videos, two from the morning test and two recent just for the fun of it.
i have trimmed one video, to capture the launch and 100km/h mark only.

answering your questions, the car has more than 57,000 km at the moment.
in regards to the running in-period, i was driving it safely not pushing it hard or anything for the first 1,000km. i didn't measure it based rpm, but i wasn't crossing 140km/hr for the same period. rest was in normal cruising with some speeding here n there and really started to drive it heavily after 12,000km.

btw, my car is 2015 MY with the 7G-tronic transmission I'm not sure about ur S coupe, i think its the new 9G-tronic, but that shouldn't be any different at all in terms of acceleration if i believe if not even better.

its really difficult to achieve the manufacturers acceleration figuers to be honest as mentioned by the Guys above, but hey 4.8 sec is quite good enough.

@Kowalski thanks buddy !!

here are the videos, please enjoy

All the 550 coupes in the US are AWD. Is that not the case in other markets.

In the European market, there are both RWD and AWD versions available for the S500.
I think, but I'm not 100% sure, that for the right hand drive version of the vehicle (UK), AWD is not available, not even as an option.

Hey man!
First of all, thanks for your effort, making the videos, and giving all the details!
Much appreciated!

Well, if you were gentle with it for 12,000km, then it has been run-in very well. I don't think I would have had the patience.

Indeed, my car has the 9G-tronic. However, that should not influence acceleration - it's only purpose is to improve fuel economy.

You're right, from all the tests, and videos, 4,8sec seems to be a very good 0-100 time for the car.
I'm disappointed by the fact that, under very good conditions, having 2000 RPM before launch, only 35% fuel in the car, you still get 0,2 sec behind official time.
In my opinion, the car should do the guaranteed 4,6 sec always, and when you have less fuel, launch at 2000 RPM, you should actually be faster than 4,6.
This is what I'm still not understanding - how can they claim that the car reaches 100 in 4,6, yet all of us, and the video, only manage around 5sec?
False advertising? Or am I missing something?

Anyway, thanks for all the help - at least I don't feel alone anymore.

Just curious what all of your "must have" options are when buying your S Coupe?

Just curious what all of your "must have" options are when buying your S Coupe?

Depends on your personal priorities for the car and how/where you use it. I will list them by category.
I will not list any cosmetic options (amg pack, designo leather, rims, etc.), as these are purely up to your styling preferences.
For me, the following were must haves:

1. General Safety
-Driver assistance package: multiple systems designed to prevent accidents. Of course computers have not reached a point where they can detect and prevent any crash, but these systems combined will reduce chances of an accident, or at least severity of it, most of the time. Also, as a convenience of this package, you get autonomous driving system Distrionic Plus which I always use in traffic jams or other stop&go traffic.
-night view assistant: If you drive at night in poorly lit areas, where there is a risk of pedestrians or large animals on the road, this will help a lot.
-Head up display: information on navigation, current speed, and current restrictions or speed limit, all displayed on the windshield. You don't need to take your eyes off the road so much.

2. General driving convenience:
-360 degree camera: very good, full of information and useful - especially in crowded cities or car parks. There are demonstration videos on youtube.
-Warmth package (good if you live in a cold area): includes heated central armrest, door panels and steering wheel. Really nice in winter.
-seat comfort package: includes the massage seats - awesome driving home after a long day, or long road trips. Absolutely must have if you ever have back pain.

3. Audio/communication/others
-Universal telephony package. It's a little known detail that this systems also includes an exterior antenna which improves significantly mobile reception. You will have much better coverage and mobile data speeds - helpful if you listen to online radio while driving.

Also, there are some options which are the opposite of "must haves" :)
-Magic sky control - doesn't make the panoramic roof completely opaque. The car comes with a sunshade in standard that can do this. This is just a gadget to show your friends.
-splitview - when I'm driving, I don't want my passenger watching a movie.
-touchpad - I have it, but would not order it again. I never use it, the control wheel is much more convenient. Also, it has a very cheap plastic feel to it - like 10 year old laptop trackpad cheap.

Anymore questions, I'm glad to answer!

Hello @peterleo and @Mss7211. First off, congratulations. I think the S coupé is currently one if not THE prettiest four seater coupé on sale today.
Agree.
4,6 is best possible in best conditions.
Maybe 0,2 sec is due equipment ( cell phone stopwatch ).
GPS is more precise.
However, agree with @peterleo about claimed times.
But either way, I wouldnt mind in that car and if it need a 5 sec to 100kmh. :) Nice car, current my favourite , enjoy and have many happy miles. :) :wave4:

I've come to the conclusion that, at least Mercedes, advertises acceleration time in the same way they advertise fuel consumption - very optimistic, not really reachable under normal conditions.
What does everyone think? Are advertised acceleration times optimistic figures given by manufacturers?
What about BMW, Audi, Porsche?

Thanks for your input Peter.

I will buy a slightly used S500 and most of them are well equipped, it seems it's depreciating quite fast.

Warmth package is must for me and ventilated seats.

However some are 7G 4Matic while most 9G's are not 4Matic, others have MBC but some consider it a gimmick.

I think the AMG pack makes the car look better, the base seems a bit plain. I need to see them in real life to see if it is a major difference. AMG ones are more expensive so I may take a newer, better equipped non AMG.

I have a good offer from a MB dealer for a S500 9G non 4Matic/AMG in emerald green, almost fully spect, but I didn't saw any emerald green coupes in real life, in photos it looks more black.

From what I know Porsche has a more conservative approach in terms of acceleration times and some tests showed better performance.
