R-Class R-Class Facelift

The Mercedes-Benz R-Class (W251) is a mid-size luxury MPV introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 2005 for the 2006 model year. The R-Class shared its platform with the M-Class (W164) and GL-Class (X164) and was available in two wheelbase lengths: standard 2,980 mm (117.3 in) and long 3,215 mm (126.6 in).
Wow, it looks like a major facelift. I can't remember the last time MB did this to a normal model (The SL is in a different league).

I hope they work on the interior too. Some more power for the V6 would be nice too.

M

Even with the camo, the front looks much better! :D

I really hope they get the front right, because otherwiase this is a fine looking wagon.

CLC? ;) Seriously tho this looks like its getting the same verdict. 'not enough sales figures to justify financing an all new model development so a major facelift instead'.

^ the car is not even old enough for an all new model.

And Siko is right....it already looks better than before...can't wait, I like the R-class.

Is it me, or do those headlights under the camo look like they're from the W204 C-Class? :eek2:

Yep, but dat FL ^ mite not drop for another 18 to 24 months yet. Its all a little early to speculate tho (which is wot im doing lol) so ges we'll have to wait see

well i can see one major improvement is that it has a TOW PACKAGE.

This hurt it in US sales. People who buy this large of a vehicle want to be able to tow the jet ski or pop up camper.

US should also get the short wheelbase. And the diesel should come in the 2wd to maximize fuel mileage. I got 27.5 in a AWD diesel, which is great for such a large vehicle.

Beef up the front, flatten out the hood, add tow package, change the side mirrors to larger SUV style, and you've got something grand.

Guess it is going to be SL kind of face lift where the new corporate front end gets mashed on to the old car to create a bastard.

Interior is same old same except the sterring wheel and cup holders and COMAND syst.

My guess for the front is the new bumper from the B-class, 2 bars/louvres and sl head lights.

i dont know what they're going to do with the rear lights. LEDs maybe? No? And a new rear bumper.

One thing's for sure the R always generates discussion. No car can be all things to all people - but it's a brave one that makes a valiant attempt. It's clearly not a failure - just a niche vehicle. I never get tired of looking at mine. To me, the GST is one of the few concept cars that was actually "built" with relatively minor changes (ie. no suicide doors, antenna cover instead of glass all the way back, full taillights instead of triple slits). Has anyone noticed features copied now by other makers like the Pano Roof? I have yet to see a Dodge Challenger on the streets but that's another example of a closely followed concept car (comparison to Chrysler purely unintentional and delusional)

Trust me , the car is mercs biggest faiure, even merc has admitted it has failed miserably over the R class, and lessons have been learnt. Niche car is not a car that is selling a Quarter or 1third of its original Target..

Low sales don't necessarily mean "failure", because the R-Class itself is a very appealing vehicle. I personally am not crazy about it but after having driven it I can see the strengths and appeal this car radiates. It's comfortable, spacious, safe and in a class of its own appealing to wealthy consumers who want something that looks sporty and reasonably elegant and not like a traditional minivan. In Europe the R-Class isn't doing badly at all, but the sales in North America have not been that strong, possibly also due to weak and improper marketing that are giving consumers the impression that the car is a "minivan".

Merc has publicly stated it failed with the R class...Low sales are a failure, evry car manuf designs a car with sales in mind..just my 2 cents..

I respect your opinion. :t-cheers:

I know that Mercedes claimed the R-Class was a failure but there are many people out there that have found the R-Class to be the car they are looking for. Right now the market might not be ready but perhaps in the future there will be a large and growing market for these types of cars. And if that happens, then the R-Class was the "successful trend setter" for that type of market. :)
