I finally saw it!
This was the first time I got to watch a movie in Digital 3D. And I have to say Wow!! :D(y)

I kept myself from reading this thread as I did not want to stumble onto many 'spoilers' ;).

Now onto the movie itself... As expected, Ridley Scott delivered and this movie is just visually stunning!!

The storyline itself is OK, a few things could've been done differently, but overall a great sci-fi/horror movie.

Also found this bit of trivia...
Charlize Theron was originally cast as Elizabeth Shaw but had to decline the role due to scheduling conflicts. Later, another change in schedule freed Theron to do the film, thus allowing her to take the role of Meredith Vickers, as Noomi Rapace had already taken the role of Shaw.

And now for some spoiler goofs ;)

When Vickers asks David how long they've been in hypersleep, he replies, "2 years, 4 months, 18 days, 36 hours, 15 minutes." It is unclear why a day would be longer than the standard 24 hours, or why he wouldn't have said, "19 days, 12 hours."

When Shaw enters the rescue pod that has crash-landed on the planet's surface after the collision, Vickers' bottle of Vodka is still standing upright on the bar, unbroken.

The purported sequel(s) better be damn good after that disappointment.

I liked Prometheus because it was the first step to unravelling the mysteries of Alien. If you watch the original Alien we discover the company knew all along about the Alien and its purpose. So Prometheus is like sneaking in the rear door to unravelling the mystery of the creature.
Besides the great science fiction films are all about questions and to get the answers we need to uncover the mystery. Sadly with prequels the audience expect more of what went before, more Aliens etc... That they overlook the simple question how did we get here? The same goes for Star Wars if you strip down the prequels to the bare minimum. What you are left with is a mystery eventually becomes political and the all adage of absolute power corrupts unfortunately with a Rasta frog.

Some good points you made. Admittedly, it's been awhile since I saw the Alien movies (I was a kid when I saw it), so while I was aware of the mythology some of the finer points are lost on me.

I think I hyped Prometheus up so much in my mind (Ridley Scott + Sci-Fi), I think I was setting myself to not be blown away. I need to carve out some time and watch this and the first 2 Alien movies. I never got around seeing Aliens 3 or Resurrection. At the time it was generally panned, but is it worthwhile to watch to get a better sense of the story?

I saw Alien in the cinema.
The original version of Alien 3 is on the Blu-Ray Quadrology pack , which along with the films is packed full of interesting documentaries, scenes etc...as well as director cuts of the films.
The original directors vision of Alien 3 is actually a very well crafted Art house version there is a lot of sub-plot where some see the Alien as a saviour and it adds more tension because as they want to kill it others want to save it.
I have always found Alien 3 to be confusing but this directors cut although it is still the same story it takes different directions until the forgone conclusion of sacrifice.
I have always considered the Alien to be a bio-weapon as much discussed in the film but how did we get to this and how did the company know the events leading up to Alien when they knew how to find it? and what it was?
That is hopefully what Prometheus's sequels will finally answer.
Hopefully somebody will eventually figure out to run left when something is about to fall on them?

I enjoyed Prometheus, of course, it doesn't match Ridley Scott greatest work (Alien and Blade Runner) but still is quite interesting.
On a side note, I hate Aliens...everything sucks so bad: the whole action movie theme, the actors and the terrible directing by Cameron, which IMHO, is the most overrated director ever. Horrible cinematography, too.

Prometheus II is now officially titled - "Alien: Paradise Lost"
There are supposed to be two more sequels to Prometheus in addition to the above, while Scott is saying that only the fourth film will be a direct prequel to the original Alien film. He will then answer the question of how did the Alien/Engineer ship crash on LV-426. Also, he will shed more light on Ripley's character.
CAN'T WAIT!!!!

We also have Neil Blomkamp's "Alien 5" movie which is supposed to be a direct sequel to Alien and Aliens movies :D

Is Scott the director?

Hmmmmm, I wonder what happened with Shaw (Noomi Rapace) as there's no mention of her?

No she is in it. She is apparently the Ripley of this franchise.
But it looks as if they are keeping their cards close to their chest on the reveal. Kind of like where is Luke Skywalker in The Force Awakens.

I hope Ridley Scott gets his act together. The martian, apart from his usual excellent photography was utterly predictable, boring, full of clichés and the acting very poor, specially Damon.
