SLK/SLC Preview: Next-generation Mercedes-Benz SLK

The Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is a compact executive roadster, produced by Mercedes-Benz. It was released in 1996 and was built at the Mercedes plant in Bremen, Germany, until the end of production in 2020. The former name "SLK" was derived from sportlich (sporty), leicht (lightweight), and kurz (short). With the release of the facelift R172 in 2016, the SLK-Class was renamed to SLC-Class in accordance with the revised nomenclature adopted by Mercedes. Under this scheme, roadsters use the base name "SL", followed by the model's placement in Mercedes-Benz hierarchy, the letter "C", being the roadster equivalent to the C-Class.

The current Mercedes-Benz SLK has been on the market since 2004 and recently underwent a mid-cycle facelift to keep it fresh until the arrival of the next-generation model sometime early next decade. The first two generations have been extremely successful for Mercedes selling more than half a million examples since the launch of the compact roadster back in 1997.

There are few solid details about the third-generation model but these renderings give us an early look as to what the new version could look like. As expected, the next SLK will pick up the angular styling Mercedes has adopted for most of its vehicles of late but one key change is the elimination of the F1-inspired nose on the current car.

Other features will include an optional glass panoramic sunroof integrated into the folding hard-top, as well as ribbed bonnet similar to the design used on the new SL range.

The SLK’s closest rival, BMW’s Z4, is due for an update next year and is expected to grow in both size and price, and is also tipped to adopt a new folding hard-top roof as well. The new SLK, therefore, will have its work cut out for it when it arrives several years later but its proportions and price are expected to remain similar to the current model.

I love the new front grid. But I hate with passion the new headlights... give them back to Nissan please...

I would expect, by that time, they'll be full LEDs.

Not a bad chop though.

That looks great. They should make it almost exactly like that. That front is much better than the current one which always reminds me of a fish.
