C-Class Preview: 2011 Mercedes Benz C-Class Coupe

The switch in nomenclature from the CLK to the E-Class Coupe made a bit of a stir when word began to leak last year. Just this week, the issue was broken back open when it was revealed that the new E-Class Coupe is actually based on the C-Class platform - much like its CLK predecessor. So what, then, of a true C-Class coupe? These previews show what it might look like.

Mercedes is already thought to be working on a new C-Class cabrio dubbed the CLR, opening the door for a revised two-door C-Class hardtop, though Mercedes could simply split the difference and fit a collapsible hardtop. That would help leave breathing room for the new E-Class Coupe while also providing a niche vehicle in the more affordable C-Class range. The CLC-Class is the current offering in that segment, but it's a three-door liftback and based around the older C-Class Sportcoupe. Though it has undergone a major revamp, it doesn't really match the new lineup, and will likely need to be replaced by the time of the mid-cycle refresh of the current C-Class. Mercedes' decision to fork the CLC off from the C-Class means that the new C-Coupe previewed here could also wear CLC-badging, however.

At this point it's all speculation, as Mercedes hasn't confirmed the existence of any plans for a new C-Class-based Coupe. If it does come along, however, expect powertrain options to fall in line with the rest of the C-Class, including a range of four and six-cylinder petrol units and, outside the U.S., diesels. If Mercedes does build a new coupe on the C-Class platform, it won't be until 2010 or 2011, however, leaving plenty of time for a redeveloped AMG variant. There appears to be room in the lineup for an AMG C-Class Coupe since the CLK AMG died with the CLK, and no AMG model based on the E-Class Coupe is known to be in the works yet.

Mercedes CLK could be reborn

The Mercedes CLK name could be set to return in 2011, this time based on the Mercedes C-class saloon.

According to reports in a French car magazine, the new CLK will fill the gap between the new E-class coupe (which is significantly larger than the old second-generation CLK) and the ageing CLC coupe.

The new Mercedes CLK will be aimed squarely at the lower end of the BMW 3-series coupe range. Aside from losing the rear pair of doors and roughly 100mm in length, the new CLK will be visually very similar to the C-class, with an identical nose and similar rear end treatment.

Mechanically, the CLK will also borrow heavily from the C-class, and will get the same direct-injection petrol-engines soon to go into the saloon, along with stop-start technology and the company’s new 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel first seen in the C250 CDI.

So what is going on? The E coupe aka CLK has the exact same wheel base as the C-class, and it isn't 'significantly larger' than the old CLK. I can't see how MB can squeeze in a C-class coupe between the normal C-class sedan and this so called "E coupe"

Mercedes-Benz’ mid-size coupe offerings have been a little confusing as of late. The German automaker first decided to replace its C-Class-based CLK with the all-new E-Class-based E-Class Coupe, but Mercedes officials recently revealed the E-Class Coupe is only about 60 percent based on the E-Class’ architecture. As if the line between the previous CLK and current E-Class Coupe wasn’t blurred enough, new reports are now surfacing that the CLK will not necessarily be discontinued.

According to Top Speed, Mercedes-Benz has plans to revive the CLK nameplate in 2011. However, the next-generation CLK will likely move down-scale from where the last CLK was positioned. Whereas the CLK was traditionally marketed as an E-Class coupe — despite its C-Class underpinnings — the 2011 model will wholeheartedly embrace its C-Class roots.

The next-generation CLK-Class will reportedly take on the styling of the C-Class Sedan, essentially creating a true C-Class coupe. The new model will give Mercedes-Benz a legitimate entry-level sedan, and could also give some Audi A5 and BMW 3-Series Coupe buyers reason to take a second look at the CLK.

However, despite the model’s move downscale, the new version is expected to grow 5 centimeters over the current car. It remains unclear what engines will motivate the new-age CLK, but the coupe will likely reflect the offerings of the C-Class Sedan.

This sounds much like a 1-series coupe competitor. I knew that the heavily facelifted C-Class coupe was just a stop over for something more proper.

I would rather see this replace the CLC than a B-Class Coupe. The more I see of the CLC on the streets here the more I hate it. The design has grown sour on me and I feel that production should be ended as soon as possible. Terrible, terrible car.

^^ I quite like the CLC. it's the A and B that I hate.

These are so inferior in terms of comfort, finish, sound isolation, handling, refinment, driving pleasure... Well in anything in fact, compared to the CLC.

The CLC looks quite nice, has a premium interior, good handling and comfort. It does a good job at MB entry level, I rather would see MB ditch the A and B (noisy and uncomfortable are not what I want from my MB. And the special motors are not updated any more because they are unique to the A and B...).

It's only a bit pricey for what it offers, but for me it's a true MB unlike the A and B.

Mercedes-Benz planning true C-Class Coupe?

Mercedes-Benz’ mid-size coupe offerings have been a bit confusing over the years – with the lines between the E- and C-Class being a blur — but the German automaker could finally sort things out by 2011. Mercedes recently launched the new E-Class Coupe – replacing the CLK-Class – and a new report indicates a C-Class Coupe could also be on the way.

Although it was recently revealed that the E-Class Coupe was still at least partially based on the C-Class’ architecture, a true C-Class Coupe could be on the way for the German automaker. According to Auto Motor und Sport, Mercedes is planning on replacing its CLC with a true C-Class Coupe in 2011.

The Euro-spec CLC is essentially a three-door liftback version of the C-Class, but is actually based on the previous-generation car. As such the CLC is due for a mid-cycle refresh in 2011 – bringing its styling in line with the new car – at which time Mercedes will likely replace it was a new C-Class Coupe model.

The C-Class Coupe would be available in the U.S. – going head-to-head with the BMW 3-Series coupe and Audi A5 – and could also spawn a convertible version. Like the recently launched Lexus IS convertible, the C-Class convertible – believed to be dubbed the CLR – would use a retractable hardtop.

MB needs something in the U.S. to fill the huge price gap between the C + E class. A car such as this would fill that space nicely.

If this thing is actually a coupe version of the current C-class model then it will go directly against the 3 series coupe. The 1 series is not/ nor will it ever be a C-class competitor.

Now if it is the hatchback thing then it might be a possibility.
