Cayenne Porsche Launching Diesel Cayenne in 2009

The Porsche Cayenne is a series of automobiles manufactured by Porsche since 2002. It is a luxury crossover SUV, and has been described as both a full-sized and a mid-sized vehicle.

Porsche is just over a year away from launching its first ever diesel model with news today the company plans to release a diesel powered Cayenne SUV next year. Porsche will likely go with a V6 diesel borrowed from Audi, which insiders claim will develop more than 300hp. Porsche had the option of selecting V8, V10 and even V12 diesel powerplants (as seen in the Audi R8 TDI concept) but ruled these out because they were deemed too heavy.

The information comes from UK auto industry analyst Peter Schmidt, who revealed to Automotive News Europe that “the diesel engine will be an upgraded V6 diesel from Audi.” Porsche wasn’t willing to confirm the comments but previously its CEO Wendelin Wiedeking said diesel powertrains were of interest to the carmaker.

Part of the reason for the inclusion of diesel powertrains is stricter emissions laws coming in to Europe, which mandates carmakers reduce their fleet average carbon emissions. According to Schmidt, Audi is developing a new twin-turbocharged 3.2L V6 diesel with more than 300hp and consumption figures of better than 30mpg.

To reduce its carbon footprint and improve the fuel-economy of its some of its vehicles, Porsche is also developing new hybrid technology with sister brand Volkswagen that’ll be available as an option on its next-gen Cayenne SUV and Panamera four-door coupe.

Audi has recently unveiled its diesel powered TT Coupe and cross-country rival Mercedes has also flirted with the possibility of a diesel performance car, even going so far as to build a short-lived C30 CDI AMG.

Hell is starting to frozen ...

What's next? A Ferrari 4dr coupe AWD diesel? :D

Makes perfect sense to me :t-hands:

Of course it does.

Today diesel engines can be as responsive, smooth & sporty as petrol engines. So, no problem seeing them in sporty-performance cars like Porsche etc.

Perhaps one day we will be able to drive diesel-powered M car. :D

A Porsche Diesel SUV? F. Porsche must be rolling in his grave. :eusa_pray

F. Porsche has been rolling in his grave since the decided to realease a freaking SUV in the first place.

F. Porsche has been REALLY rolling in his grave since a Cayenne was released with a underpowered Volkswagen V6 with a 0-100 in 10+ seconds !

So since he's already rolling in his grave, what's the big deal at this point.

Diesel engines have evolved especially turbo charged ones, so I can't see why Porsche wouldn't jump on the wagon especially now when low consumption engine alternatives are hot on the market. I'd rather see a diesel torque beast under the hood of a Cayenne then some BS hybrid engine.

Lol :D,so true:usa7uh:

As long as we don't get a Porsche Cayman 1.8 TDi. With the 2 ton weight the Cayenne is already a lost case, so they can do what ever to it. It's already a dead horse

Its over ..I mean, world as we know it..Now I´ve seen everything and I can go shoot myself peacefully :D:D:usa7uh:

I'm gonna kill myself.

But I'll have to see it first. Hopefully it's rev happy with good exhaust sounds + DPF.

I always loved Porsche.

But after that, it definitely will be over. The Cayenne is already a big piece of crap that does not belong to Porsche family, but a diesel...even worse...

Diesel is everything but sporty. Crappy noise, no revvs, increasing rpm=decreasing power...

It is a disaster. Porsche is on the way to loose its image.

Finally, it could be true that they are developping a Porsche based on the next A3...:t-banghea

First time in Porsche history

Despite Porsche managers claiming there will be no diesel Porsches, a big SUV without a diesel engine option is almost inappropriate nowadays. With increasing pressure from environmentalist, Porsche has put forth the Cayenne Hybrid. Additionally, with Porsche's own goal of reducing CO2 emissions by more than 20 percent by the year 2012, a diesel version is inevitable. Here are first shots of what appears to be a diesel Cayenne cold whether testing.

From the spy photographer, “I was just passing a petrol station in northern Sweden when I noticed four Porsche Cayennes standing there at a petrol station. There is nothing strange about this situation, but this time it was something that caught my eye. One of the Cayennes was driving off the diesel pump.

As all the cars left the petrol station I followed them for a while, and they stopped outside a restaurant. I noticed that one of the Cayenne's exhaust pipes were quite different. Not the usual big twin pipes, but instead a single smaller pipe on each side, and that was the Cayenne driving off the diesel pump. With no signs inside the car I decided to wait for them to finish their dinner and listen to the engine as they turned on the engine and drove off. And as suspected, I was right, that was really a diesel powered Porsche - no doubt about that.”

As previously reported, it is believed the most logical engine candidate, which is currently being developed by Audi, is a twin-turbocharged 3.2 litre V6 diesel engine producing more than 300hp.
