Panamera Porsche 928 to be reborn as Porsche Panamera Coupe

The Porsche Panamera is a mid to full-sized luxury car (E-segment or F-segment for LWB in Europe) manufactured and marketed by Porsche. The Panamera name, as with the Carrera name, is derived from the Carrera Panamericana race.

Porsche boss Matthias Mueller has revealed plans for new variants on the Porsche Panamera – including a Panamera Coupe – and more new models.

We reported as long ago as 2009 that the Porsche Panamera would spawn more models, and in particular a two-door coupe that would be a Porsche 928 for the 21st century. And that’s exactly what’s happening.
Porsche boss, Matthias Mueller, has confirmed that Porsche are planning to extend the Panamera offerings with a coupe and probably a production version of the very convincing Panamera Sport Turismo Concept we saw at Geneva in the spring, although nothing has been signed off yet.
The most likely time for the Panamera Coupe and Shooting Brake to arrive is after Porsche refresh the Panamera next year, so we should expect a ‘new 928′ to arrive some time in 2014.
But it won’t be just the Panamera that gets variants, as it seems likely Porsche are going to pursue the ‘Pajun’ route with a smaller version of the Panamera to take on the BMW 5 Series et al. That too will doubtless follow VW’s favoured route of extracting as many variants as possible out of every core vehicle.
Also still in the mix is a new sports car to sit above the 911 and below the 918 – the Porsche 960 – which is designed to compete with cars like the Ferrari 458 and McLaren 12C and likely to be mid-engined with either a flat six or V8 delivering in the region of 600bhp.
Most of the world may be short of money at the moment, but it seems there’s enough to keep pushing Porsche sales ever upwards.

I have been waiting for this car for a long time. I hope it is true and will come in short period of time.

We will almost certainly not be seeing a series I Panamera based 2 door coupe/convertible. Nor will there there be a Sport Turismo based on the Panamera I. These configurations will be saved for the all-new series II cars, which should be making their first appearance in production guise sometime in mid/late 2015. Much seems to indicate that the series II Panamera line will be VERY similar in appearance to the recent Sport Turismo Concept.

What's so comical or disillusion about it? The Panamera weigh 2 tons but yet match many two seater GTs in performance. It's not far fetched to think that a lighter two door model based on such a sophisticated chassi would be a wonder performer.

Why bother trying to reason with him, his blinkered to one brand and everything else (especial VAG related) is sh1t. Of course Porsche is very capable of competing on the level of the F12, it's just a matter of desire to do so because they clearly have the engineering skill to tackle such a task.

I hope this car can compete against the new Maserati GranTurismo. They're in the same level right?

That would probably be the next generation GranTurismo. The current generation is brilliant is a bit disadvantaged against the billions that Porsche have poured into making the Panamera such a spectacular car for its size and weight.

Yes, I can understand why most people think the Sport Turismo concept previews the Mk2, but actually, it previews the Mk1 Facelift and not the Mk2. Porsche CEO has stated that a 2-door coupe has been approved for Mk2, but the wagon style hasn't exactly.

Sure, the Sport Turismo's rear will not be found on Mk2 Facelift, but most of the rest will (headlights etc). The concept is based on an Mk1 body, not Mk2 (not exist yet).

Actually, the headlamps and front fascia of the Sport Turismo Concept preview the MkI Panny facelift. But the STCs' flanks, wheel arches, side sculpturing, greenhouse including the rake of the A pillar/windscreen and sideglass graphic are all a very accurate indication of what we can expect with regard to the MkII Panamera. Seeing the STCs' rear on the MkII is also highly probable. Porsche has recently done some promo work in L.A., having the STC cruising public streets. Reaction to the car was overwhelmingly favorable.
