Hi all,

It's been a while since I last posted it but I've been happily enjoying my 2015 A250 for the last 4 years.

Like most things, us human beings want a change and it's getting about that time! :) My car has also clocked up a few km's and is now of course out of warranty. I'm up for a service, rego, a couple of out of warranty things ($1000), break pads and whatever else Benz says needs doing on my upcoming service..... I keep ignoring that popup!

I've driven a few AMG's over the years and have always wanted one but they've just been a bit out of reach. I have been eyeing of the A35 but looking at the new A250 fully loaded at around $69,000 (Australian Dollars) I think it's just going to be a bit out of reach. Obviously, the A35 pricing isn't confirmed but I've heard it will start in the $70,000's (dealer said it has to otherwise no-one would buy the A250) and as you can imagine it will quickly go up from there with the options. Have also heard the new A45 will be close to 100k

Based on this I had a drive of the A250 4Matic and thought and liked it but for some reason it doesn't pull me in. I think it's likely that there is no sound on the upshift from the exhaust and the engine is a bit "revvy" and noisy through the cabin... (Sure the A45 is loud but it's a good loud!). Putting the A250 in sport mode it drives well but like the outgoing A250, holds the revs too long. With 177 A250, the engine doesn't give me any real feedback except that I feel I should be nice to it and not push it too hard. I by no means have a heavy foot but it I like to have a car not feel too "delicate" and worry that long term the engine could bother me or not last the distance. I do about 20,000km a year and keep the cars for about 4 years. From my experience buying cars too, the first year models always have niggling issues that get later fixed so this is a bit of a worry.

On the positive side, the new A250 has lots of great tech and I can spec it up with all of the options, adaptive suspension, seat comfort, vision, safety pack, exclusive pack (don't have it all in front of me) for a figure I'm much more comfortable with. I'd also qualify for 3 years free services and a bit of a discount through the corporate program.

Then there's the A45. I drove one recently...... Wow. Over mine which is the pre-facelift model I'd obviously get all of the A45 goodness, performance, bucket seat etc, I'd also get 4Matic, dynamic modes the command, apply car play, electric seats, climate control etc. so a bit of an upgrade for the same $$ as the W177 A250 with very low km and a couple of years warranty... but as we all know it's dated a bit now.

In my heart, I'm thinking 2017-18 A45 but worry I would do myself a disservice to not wait for the A35 and and least see what is there for the $$. I also worry that the A45 will take a big hit and dive further once it comes out.... this could mean I pick up a bargain (assuming everyone else hasn't grabbed the last of the newer models) or I lose a big chunk of the car value overnight.....

It was funny when I drove both cars at the dealership

The used car salesman selling me the A45 says,

"The AMG models hold their value for a long time even if a new model comes out. I'd be more worried about the new cars as they drop in value the moment you drive them away from the dealer" He also said the new A-Classes are a cheaper build which was surprising!!

The new car salesman says

"I wouldn't buy the A45, in 3 years time, that car will be 5 years old"

In summary, I guess I can't make money on cars either way (joking) :)

Ultimately, I have the option of A250, A45 or just doing nothing! Let me know your thoughts please

I see the new A-class pretty often here in Germany especially on my daily route. The W176 was a nice car but right now the current A-Class is the best looking hatch for me. I would probably stick to the sedan though.

Your impression of the new A250 is shared with this review its apparently less engaging than the last one. Your choice really depends on what you prefer a sporty car over comfort and tech or visa versa. Hence I think the A35 would have been a good compromise, but since its a little out of reach I would opt for the A250 its newer, better looking and you will enjoy sitting in the cabin a lot more than the A45 and its not slow.

There is absolutely no way in Hell I'd take an A250 over an A45. New model or not. A45 is so much more fun. And I am talkng first hand experience, as a friend of mine has an A45 AMG which I quite often drive.

Thanks for all the replies. The results are neck and neck at 7 a piece. After giving it a few days, I’m thinking A45 :)

Found a good deal on one but..... it’s red. Don’t mind it but not my first choice. This one is interstate so would need to buy without seeing.

Prefer white but how do the A45’s look in Red in person? Haven’t seen too many red a classes but maybe a bit dull?

A45 is the way to go. You don't want to end up with an FWD Mercedes either way.

Good luck deciding, but the little lipstick the new model offers over the old car is in no way worth it. That new A class is avarage at best, while the A45 is something special.

Work some magic and try to get into an A35. It's the best compromise of both worlds.

Ultimately the A45 is now a 6 year old vehicle and the interior design etc. reflects that.

I am driving the new A250 AMG Line W177 in FWD and I love it. I can only report positive about it. The power is amazing, and I live in a country where I get to actually legally exploit this power. ;)

To be honest, the FWD A250 doesn't really drive like a FWD car. I came from a RWD BMW 1-Series and don't notice to many differences in daily driving. The only time I know it's FWD is when I do a kickdown, which causes the front wheels to spin and jerk me left/right (torque steer). That's pretty much it. For a FWD car the A250 drives very nicely, and I don't even detect any understeer in hard cornering. I drive it sporty, but I don't push it to its limits. For my needs it's very nice, competent and fun (I have the Adaptive Suspension and it's awesome). :)

Regarding the engine, I find it quite amazing actually. It's smooth, powerful, has no turbo-lag and I find it provides actually quite a lot of feedback. I also do about 20,000+ km a year and spend a lot of time on the Autobahn. These engines are designed to be durable and reliable if you treat them right. And by that I mean regular maintenance, driving them warm before you have fun (no short trips etc.), and very importantly cooling down the turbo before shutting the engine off. The latter is probably only important if you live in Germany (Autobahn) or regularly drive on a racetrack. 110 km/h top speed on Australian highways? Not a big deal.

The A45 AMG will be more brutal, faster, handle better etc. If you want that, go for it. But the new A250 is plenty fast, plenty fun and it has MBUX. I'm telling you, I don't ever want to drive another car which doesn't have this feature. I use it all the time and it works great. Just yesterday I was driving with a friend to Ingolstadt. Need to find the destination? No problem, just ask "Hey Mercedes..." and bam, the system will guide you to where you need to go. And 9/10 times it gets your destination right. It's so nice to do this while driving without having to pull over and stop.

Just some input from me. And here's a shot of my baby! :)

Hey guys. I thought I would post an update and let you know how things panned out after my posts above. I ended up getting a 2016 facelift A45 and I have absolutely loved it (with some negatives as well below). It's been a great car to drive, engaging, brilliant sound and a massive upgrade over my old A250.

A big factor was price and comparing to the newer cars, I got a good deal. It was pre-owned and while I have no issues It's coming close to the end of the 2 year MB Warranty for pre-owned vehicles so I'm considering options. I always thought I would go in with 2 years and see how I felt after that.

Whilst owning this this car has been fun and I have no regrets going this way, I think I will be ready for a change over the next 6 months. Again no regrets as I knew this but this car is expensive to run but new tyres, $1500, First services $2000 (got this free as part of the deal) and petrol!!! This thing just chews the juice. I was getting around 7 or 8 litres / 100 combined on my A250 whereas around 10.5 on the A45. Other negatives:

- Can't leave the house or go anywhere without everyone knowing you're on the move :D
- Need to wait for the car to get up to temp. When going out of a carpark or up a hill after starting, if I don't let it warm up, it seems to not want to engage gears that well.
- A bit of a potent weapon. Whilst I love the performance, I think I've had my fun. This thing just wants you to keep going. The trouble is you can go, you can overtake someone, you can take off from the lights (apart from the turbo lag), you can quickly add 20km (or even 50km) without realising it and.... I just don't think I need it....

Glad I tried it, owned and enjoyed it but I think now I'm looking for something less hot, warmer not so in your face always on ready and urging me to put my foot down. There is just no relaxed driving in this car, even in comfort mode...... and sometimes I want that

So, I'm back looking for another car. Looking at the A250 me thinks so will probably go that way at some point in the near future. I did check out the models and pricing and in Australia I was really shocked at the price of these things fully loaded. $75000k or thereabouts !! which is a big jump on the previous model.

Will see what happens over the next 6 months :D

Congrats on buying the A45 AMG. It sounds fantastic for a 4 cylinder compared with the quieter recent AMGs.

There is nothing wrong with moving on if you feel like you have scratched the itch. The A45 is a hyperhatch and I can imagine they it eggs you on to accelerate and is never docile.

However I didn't know that not warming up the engine can make it reluctant to engage gears.
