Ok, it's an obvious and often drawn comparison, but here, in 2009, we have a classic sports car tussle between the all-new, the thouroughly revised and the last-on-the-lot-collectable. Each car conforms closely to a tried and tested formula: two doors, two seats, six cylinders and rear-wheel drive. Imagine, you're in the market, not so much for a daily driver but a second car that can do the commute every now and then, that has to first and foremost appeal to the senses in the realm of driving pleasure. The car has to look good too - equally presentable on a winding country road or cruising the trendiest coastal town waterfronts. Oh, and just for good measure - it needs to hold its own on a trackday or two.

I've always been compelled by this comparison because the similarity ends with the coincidental characteristics mentioned above. Each car exhibits a different mechanical approach to achieving dynamic motoring thrills.

It's a tough choice - so vote and post enthusiastically!

The All New: Nissan 370Z
Nissan's nuggety new 370Z is creating quite a stir in motoring circles, it's a classic sportscar - a tribute to the Nissan Z's of yore. Great proportions and chunky stance make the 370Z look like a serious contender. It makes use of a fizzy, front-mounted V6 coupled to a longitudinally orientated drivetrain powering the rear wheels. Initial driving reviews are very favourable.

The interior is greatly improved with more up-market materials, more cargo space and innovative little throttle-blipping feature called Synchro Rev for perfect down shifts.

The Thoroughly Revised: Porsche Cayman S

The Porsche Cayman S is widely regarded as the most balanced, sharpest and most precisely handling car in its class. Its compact dimensions and concentrated Porsche styling make it the Porsche enthusiasts' default choice in this company but this comes at a premium. The Cayman makes use of a mid-engined flat-six driving the rear wheels - marking it as the most unique approach in this comparison.

Its interior is top notch and driving controls are said to be perfectly weighted and precise to use.

The Collectable: BMW Z4 M Coupé

More than likely totally unavailable brand-new - unless Credit Crunch 2008 left a few late-production models in dealer stock - the Z4 M Coupé represents the end of an era. Shopping around may yield the lucky buyer with one of the most collectable of 21st century cars - a veritable future classic. A notable feature of this car is the incomparable S54 in-line six cylinder engine. It's the last of the naturally aspirated engines in such a configuration for the M Division. And, so what, you ask? Consider that, for almost two decades the M range of in-line six cylinder engines constituted a benchmark for performance engines and you'll see why this is such a significant piece of engineering; the Z4 M Coupe is the last of its kind for a long time.

The rear-wheel drive Z4 M is uncompromisingly stiff and sporty and is its best being flung through smooth, sweeping bends.

The interior is typical of Bangle-era cars featuring the horizontally partitioned dashboard layout with customary BMW feel to the driver's controls. It's well put together albeit rather cosy.

In terms of refinement, chassi and engineering, the Cayman is technically a supercar. For under 100k you will impossibly find anything more exquisite. Doing 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds with a mere 320hp just show what an achievement the car is. Just imagine what destruction it would create with an additional 50hp or so.

Since I'm in the market for a Z4 Coupe my vote goes to Z4 :D

Here in Sweden there is still a big price difference between Z4M and Cayman S both in price and ownership costs.

It's a nigh impossible choice for me - I hope that came across in my description of the contenders. I have the utmost appreciation for all three of them.

If money was no object then the Cayman S would be in my garage.
If sentiment, performance and individualism were paramount then the Z4 would be soo cool to own.

But in the end I went with my wallet. In this day & age, I'm more and more becoming a fan of the "people's champion" - a car that does 90% of what the others do for 60% of the price.

And so my vote went to the 370Z and I have a feeling it wouldn't be a decision I'd regret.

[Luw, I don't think a Cayman S, PDK-equipped or not, will make 0-100 km/h in 4.6 secs. That's a tad optimistic.]

[And can a mod please edit the title thread to remove the "Poll: Poll:" redundancy?]

One certainly need deep pockets to afford a Cayman while the Nissan is price accessible for the average successful sales guy while only a manager can fork over near 911 money for a properly speced Cayman S. Worth the money but highly pricey.

I voted for the Z4. I love the Cayman, too, but...well, the Z4 Coupe really has something.

I'm not the greatest fan at all of the Z4 roadster: I just don't like it at all, altough I'm a huge Roadster fan. In fact I can say that there is not ONE part of the design of this car that I like.

But the Z4 Coupe, I couldn't say why, is touching my emotions like few other modern cars. Really strange to hate the Roadster and love the Coupe...

I will not say anything about the motor: My bro has an e46 M3 with Supersprint exhaust. It's not a motor, it's the devil incarnate. I really doubt either the Cayman or the Z have the potential to be as angry as it with the right exhaust...

It's revving, screaming, revving, screaming, and pushing the car like there's no tomorrow. Insane.

Z4 Coupé, if only it were for the engine :icondrool:icondrool:icondrool:icondrool:icondrool

By far the best engine of the three. And the funnest. And the most legendary. And the whatever.

The 370 makes me puke. Looks absolutely terrible. The Porsche is a great car.

Hell, no love for the 370Z eh? You'd swear this was some German car forum or something. Erm...

Well it's an excellent car, and offers you more for less compared to a german competitor. So IRL, it surely 'd get more votes as some can afford it and not the others.

However, in a poll where you compare the cars, well the Nissan just isn't as appealing, as emotional as the Porsche or Beemer...

Like Clarkson once said (about German cars, funnily...): long in engineering, but a bit short on passion...Compared to a Porsche or an M-car that is. The 370Z is, in itself, a very nice sportscar.

^ I agree with you both. Put the money factor aside and the two Germans just have a different level of overall appeal that the 370Z - as good as it may be - just can't match. Pity, because it's one of those "power to the people" cars and it deserves to have greater emotional cachet. I think the 370Z will look smashing in white but park it next to a new Cayman S and I'll be hard pressed to take my eyes off the Porsche.

Still, in these pragmatic times I'm going to stand by my vote for what I surely expect to be a cracking good drive in its own right. I don't think the 370Z is a Cayman beater, nor can it ever have the special quality of the Z4 M Coupe. But, one thing is for sure, it deserves to be compared in this company...

Since it's not the new Z4, a PDK Cayman S for me. Best sports car of the bunch, best looking and since it HAS a boxer engine, it must be fabulous...;) :D

Seriously, without thinking twice, the Cayman S. A black one, with TechArt rims...:t-drive:

Never liked the Z4 despite it's qualities, it's just an ugly and not appealing car. 370Z? I can only comment on looks and that's...Oh well, i don't want to make Martin angry...:D

:t-cheers:

I'll take the Porsche too, but I am becoming more intrigued by the 370Z as we wait for it to go on sale here. The price is right and if the styling is better in person it could be a possible choice.

New Z4 over old one now that I've seen the new one in person.

A hard decision for me... but went with Z4 here! Fun to drive & an excitment that can only come from M-power! :usa7uh:

One more thing, Cayman is what my gf's aunt drive & she is turning 70 next month! Reason enough to avoid it, j/k! :D
