LOS ANGELES (AP) — Sony broke out the heavy ammunition Monday against Microsoft, announcing its forthcoming PlayStation 4 will cost $399 — $100 less than the competing Xbox One. "The gaming landscape is changing with new business models and new ways to play," said Andrew House, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.

The price announcement wasn't the only shot fired at Microsoft during Sony's presentation at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the gaming industry's annual U.S. trade show. The loudest applause at the company's event show came when Jack Tretton, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, announced that the company would not try to restrict used game sales. Tretton also said the PS4 would not require a persistent online connection.

"PlayStation 4 disc-based games don't need to be connected online to play or any type of authentication," said Tretton. "If you enjoy playing single-player games offline, PS4 won't require to you check in online period and it won't stop working if you haven't authenticated in 24 hours."

Microsoft has been criticized for its vague statements about whether it will allow buyers of its Xbox One to play secondhand software, as well as its requirement that the new console be connected to the Internet at least once every 24 hours. Beyond those issues, Sony gave potential PS4 buyers plenty of games to look forward to later this year. The company's Santa Monica Studios, the developer of the "God of War" franchise, introduced the steampunk thriller "The Order: 1866." Quantic Dream, the French studio behind "Heavy Rain" and the upcoming "Beyond: Two Souls," provided a comical glimpse at the fantasy "The Dark Sorcerer."

Shu Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios, said the company's studios have more than 30 PS4 games in development, including 12 brand new intellectual properties.
Sony also showed new footage from previously announced PS4 games like the superhero adventure "InFamous: Second Son," the auto racing simulator "Drive Club" and the sci-fi shooter "Killzone: Shadow Fall."

Several third-party developers also debuted next-generation titles at Sony's event. Bungie, the creator of the blockbuster Xbox series "Halo," showed the first in-game footage of its highly anticipated first-person shooter "Destiny." Warner Bros. showed a clip from a new "Mad Max" game, while Square-Enix announced the long-awaited "Kingdom Hearts III" and "Final Fantasy XV." Overall, Tretton said, more than 140 PS4 titles are in the pipeline.
That includes an assortment of games from smaller, independent developers, which Sony featured onstage next to giant publishers like Activision and Ubisoft. The processing chips in the PS4 are similar to those in PCs rather than the complex, idiosyncratic "Cell" architecture used in the PS3. That should make it easier for developers of all sizes to build games for Sony's new console.

Like Microsoft, Sony is betting big on social networking features. The new version of its DualShock controller includes a "share" button that allows you to post gameplay footage and screenshots. Friends can watch as you play a game, and you'll even be able to let a pal take control of your game from afar if you can't get past a tough battle. The controller also includes a touchpad and a Move motion sensor that works with a camera placed near the TV set.

Killer price point, classic ps design.
This will be the one to buy.

This is seriously cheap, at $399, it is significantly cheaper than the current top end PC graphics cards. Won't mind getting one but have to wait for GT7 to come out on PS4.

Mind this console is considerably more powerful than the One, 100$ cheaper, which is a lot, smaller and with internal power suply. Which means Sony´s engineering department is way ahed of Microsoft´s.

No need to mention the restrictions via DRM Microsoft wants to implement on their next-gen machine.

Last gen it was a hard choice, but this one is a no brainer, PS4 all the way.

I still think gaming companies will decide the future of both platforms. I will look into "gaming experience" as a whole not the HW specs. Last time, I think Xbox won.

While the US press release for the PlayStation 4 mentioned details about games, used games and pricing, it did not confirm all of the specs for the console. In Japan however, a more detailed press release clears up a few things. Sony's console is packing a 500GB hard drive (same as the Xbox One), and it will not include the camera module, which is a $59 (£44 and €49) add-on for the $399 box. By comparison, the Xbox One includes -- and requires for its use -- the Kinect 2.0 camera. (Update: Sony's confirmed that the PS4's hard drive is upgradable.)

A Best Buy listing confirms the PlayStation 4 Eye's add-on status and pricing, and that an extra DualShock 4 controller will also go for $59. We've double checked with Sony and confirmed that the system comes with a controller and mono earpiece plus HDMI, USB and power cords -- but no camera.

The spec sheet also confirms the system's dimensions at 275 x 53 x 305mm (excluding the largest projection), its ports (HDMI and optical out, 2 USB 3.0 in and 1 AUX in for use with the camera) and that a single ear mono headset is packed in with the system. That controller weighs in at 210g, includes a 1000mAh battery and one other detail some may have missed -- a built-in mono speaker. There are details specs for the camera too, which is capable of a maximum 1280 x 800 (x2) pixel capture at 60fps, 640 x 400 at 120fps, or 320 x 192 at 240fps. It has an 85 degree FOV and a 2 meter cable to connect to the system. Want to do more digging into the specs and learn about the design of the PS4? Check out the PDF linked below.

I am very surprised that until the final reveal, Xbox One orders were higher than ps4 on amazon, the fact that the the One needs permanent connexion, restricts considerably game passing and selling plus weaker specs, bigger console, less inspired design and little exclusivities should have already won people on Sony side, now with the price, i think this is a real no brainer.

Mind Sony did an awful star with PS3 and lost the US leadership to the 360. Thus the preferences were in line with the next-gen Xbox.

I´m happy to see One performing worse on Amazon. A company with such destructive policies should be punished by us consumers.

The ps4 looks like a transformer console ready to open from all the sides :D Does someone have a picture or a vid of how you put the disc in it ?

From this photo you can see the slot for the disc in that recess area between the top and bottom half of the PS4.

You can play ps3 games by cloud streaming, though i am sure this won't replace real backwrad compability.

My PS2 was silver, my PS3 is black... maybe it's time for a black and white one... it looks amazing but that's just a bad PS(in this case I mean photo shop) :D

The next-generation gaming console war has a start date.

At the Gamescom conference in Germany today, Sony announced that the next version of the PlayStation -- the PlayStation 4 -- will go on sale in North America on Nov. 15 and on Nov. 29 in Europe.

The console, which starts at $400, has a number of critical improvements over the current PlayStation 3, which was introduced seven years ago. Most notably, the system has been souped up with graphics and processing horsepower. It has an eight-core x86 processor, and 8 GB of RAM helps provide an extreme level of detail in games like "Killzone: Fall" and "Call of Duty: Ghosts."

It also comes with a new DualShock 4 controller, which is equipped with a new share button for social media integration and a new sensor that will allow the PS4's Kinect-like camera depth-and-motion sensor to read where the player is.

But the PlayStation won't be the only brand-spanking new console on shelves around the holiday season. Microsoft's Xbox One, which costs $100 more, at $500, will also hit around the same time, though Microsoft hasn't set a specific launch date. While the PlayStation might have stronger graphics and gaming edge, Microsoft is going after the living room with new TV and media center features.

Still, gamers seem to be most excited about Sony's combination of power, features and price. Sony announced today that it has received more than a million pre-orders on the console.
