Mixed feelings about this console. As a company Sony is far from being well, even when its perspective is positve, and it is far better now than it was a year ago. Microsoft faces a bigger problem in the long term, as their market share shrinks year after year in the PC sector, and the future markets trends (or perhaps current) are based on the mobile/tablet market, in which their Windows Phone 8 isn´t performing as expected.

Thus we have two companies which seem to be a bit lost, but as a product, even when is like it less than the PS4 (what we know so far), the new Xbox appears to me that it has clear goals to reach. Something I´m not sure I can tell about the new PS.

Last June, Sony purchased Gaikai, a company that can stream games -- delivering them over the internet in real time from remote servers, by sending their video frames. Now, The Wall Street Journal reports what many have suspected for months: the next PlayStation will use the service to stream games to the console.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/2/15/39...es-reports-wsj

Sony Corp. 6758.TO -1.87% is planning to offer technology to stream games to its next videogame console, people familiar with the company's plans say, alongside other enhancements to bolster its position in the market.

The new technology, to be unveiled Wednesday along with the new console, will allow users to play games delivered over the Internet, these people said. The streaming service, they added, is designed to use current PlayStation 3 titles on the new console; the new device is also expected to play new games stored on optical discs.

Sony's plans come after it acquired Gaikai Inc. last year for $380 million. Though many companies now offer simple games over the Internet, Gaikai was one of several companies that offered online access to visually intense games, which ordinarily require specialized circuitry found on high-end personal computers and gaming consoles.

The streaming technology is one of the new features and enhancements expected to be offered with the new console, which Sony plans to unveil at an event in New York. Sony's new PlayStation, for example, may control the action with higher fidelity cameras for its "Move" motion-sensing technology and touch-sensing pads on new controllers, according to people who have seen and been briefed on the devices.

...

Still, Sony is pushing ahead and has been investing heavily to prepare Gaikai's service, people familiar with the matter say. Microsoft also has experimented with its own version of cloud gaming, people at the company have said, but has in the past questioned the costs associated with building a service large enough to reach all its customers.

Klier, did you finally get your Wii-U? As I had predicted several months ago, it was going to be a flop but you weren't convinced ;)

NEW YORK--Sony has unveiled the PlayStation 4.
The PlayStation 4 has been announced in New York City. The name is definite; its features, still to be detailed. Among other things, the new PlayStation platform will be open to episodic and free-to-play content. The PlayStation 4, as discussed in the early moments of Sony's event, has a "supercharged PC architecture" with an X86 CPU, "enhanced PC GPU" (unspecified as of yet) with GDDR5, 8GB of memory, and traditional hard-drive storage. The new DualShock 4 controller is indeed the one rumored. It has enhanced rumble, a touch pad, a share button, headphone jack, and light-up bar that looks like a transplanted top of a Move wand. In addition, a stereo camera bar, which looks very Kinect-like, works with the light bar for motion controls. The Sony event thus far has continually emphasized simplicity and ease of use. Immediacy of response reducing lag time while accessing content is also one of the promised PS4 features (unlike the extremely laggy Wii U, perhaps). A secondary custom chip will allow background downloading, and games will be playable as they’re being downloaded.

Sony promises you’ll be able to scan the last few minutes of your gameplay with the push of a button and share screenshots and clips, or spectate and chat during other people’s games, and Sony promises a serious revamp of friend-making, using “real names.” The core social elements of the PS4 are being promised to work on smartphones, tablets, and the Vita as well -- on stage, the clean-looking social browser was shown on various devices, including streaming video of gameplay. Gaikai cloud technology, acquired last year by Sony, was also discussed, as a way of offering the "fastest gaming network" and enabling what is promised to be a trial-based way of playing games before buying. This would work via streaming-game technology.

Gaikai technology will also be used to power the PS4’s spectating experiences, and that ability to continually one-button broadcast your game progress. It sounds a lot like the sort of stuff PC gamers have loved, and it’s certainly the first time a home gaming console has entered this territory. The streaming/sharing technology will also work with Facebook and UStream. Remote play will be enabled as well, promising second-screen gaming on the Vita. It sounds somewhat like what the Nintendo Wii U enables on the GamePad, except in this case the experience will be translated onto a fully independent handheld device. If this works as promised, it could help make the PS4 and Vita a hardware match worth getting -- improved transmission times between the Vita and PS4 are also being promised. More will be discussed on that “later in the year.” Sony's also promised not just PlayStation 3 backward-compatibility, but PlayStation 1 and PS 2 retro gaming as well via a "PlayStation Cloud Service." Whether this will be true disc compatibility or cloud-streaming remains to be seen.

Sony's vision for the future of gaming is here.

Sony (SNE) unveiled the PlayStation 4 at a New York event on Wednesday. The new system features an impressive array of specifications and social enhancements. Here's the rundown:

The Console: The PlayStation 4 will be powered by chips that would make any top-of-the-line PC user drool: A "supercharged" eight-core x86 processor, a PC-style graphics processor, and a stunning eight gigabytes of RAM.

With these guts serving as the PS4's central brain, the console is capable of pushing graphics at 4K resolution, or supporting stereoscopic 3D in full 1080p for high definition televisions. That means it'll likely be ready for the next five to 10 years of living room display technology.

Social integration: Impressive as the graphics are, the real leaps made by Sony were found in the PS4's ability to share content.

The PS4's controller features a share button. When pressing it, users can share clips of the last few minutes of their game play and even broadcast real-time gameplay to friends.
In some instances, friends will be able to communicate with one another and even remotely take over others' games.
http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2013/02/20/4-features-the-playstation-4-absolutely-must-have?iid=EL
The PS4 also features social networking integration and personalized recommendations for downloading games and media. Sony will allow users to log into their PlayStation profiles on phones, tablets or PCs.

The Controller: Like every other iteration of the PlayStation controller before it, the PS4 controller didn't get too much of a makeover, but it packs a few new tricks.
The new DualShock 4 controller sports a touchpad placed smack in the middle, which supports two-finger multitouch. Along the bottom is a 3.5mm headphone jack for connecting a headset, and along the top is a glowing, colorful LED light strip that will identify a player.

The Network: More than ever, the PlayStation network is emerging as a central priority for Sony. And its plans for the PS4 are big. The biggest announcement Sony made Wednesday was that users will be able to "stream" PS4 games to the handheld PS Vita. But Sony doesn't want to stop there. Eventually, Sony says it will enable cloud gaming, which will allow users to play every title on any system, streamed from remote servers. That is how the PS4 will work around the fact that it isn't backwards-compatible with its PS3 predecessor, due to the radically different processors the two consoles have.

The Camera: The PS4 features a built-in camera for 3D tracking and motion control, similar to the Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) Xbox's Kinect attachment.

The Games: We're still a ways off from knowing what will be ready in time for the PS4 launch, and what will come after, but Sony already has a couple of big titles lined up. Developers showed off first-person shooter game "Killzone: Shadow Fall," team-based online racing game "Driveclub," and "The Witness," a puzzle solving game.
Quantic, a game developed Heavy Rain, was particularly impressive. The game will feature over 30,000 polygons per video game character. That delivers as close to a photorealistic video game experience as we've seen.

The Release: Sony hasn't given a firm release date aside from the fourth quarter, but generally that means it will arrive in time for the holiday shopping season. In other words, expect the PS4 sometime around November. 8704d02cbaaf96361f6f46877ccd4746.webp

I can't wait!

Very exited by all of this, and the graphics in the games look just insane. CGI-ish.

Look at this game guys, it's just off the charts! Look at the models of the cars:

Driveclub. Looks awesome!!!!!

Regarding PS4 tech specs, the system has 8 GB OF GDDR5 RAM
#1

8 GB of unified GDDR5 at 176 GB/s BW.

Insane power, this is.

Yes, it will be great HoH. Tech specs are pretty sick, and a huge leap over PS3.

I'll post some more stuff here soon!

Klier, did you finally get your Wii-U? As I had predicted several months ago, it was going to be a flop but you weren't convinced ;)

Got one on launch day, and I am sure I will be very happy with it once the 1st party Nintendo games start rolling out. But yea, it's been a very crappy slow start so far.
I am not worried yet, but please lets focus on the PS4 here in this thread!

It does look insanely realistic. If an early release game look this good, imagine how it will look when the developers get even more time to work on the game, GT6 is going to be even better than this.

New Killzone. A launch title (meaning 'crappy' visuals compared to what the system is truly capable of)

Guerrilla was at the PlayStation Meeting earlier tonight to take the wraps off a brand new Killzone title for the PlayStation 4! To mark this exciting milestone, Game Director Steven ter Heide has prepared a few words.
Today we are happy we can finally show you what we have been working on.

It has been an amazing journey for us so far, being offered the opportunity to be a launch title for the new PlayStation, and the subsequent mild panic to figure out how to best handle all of that.

But being able to now share it with you is both a scary and proud moment. We are hoping you will like what we have created, and are happy to present you with the first glimpse of Killzone Shadow Fall.

The piece of live gameplay we presented at the PlayStation Meeting shows you a new world, a new situation and a new hero.

The game is set in a near future, thirty years after the events of Killzone 3. The world is a very different place; two rival factions known as the Helghast and the Vektans live side by side in a futuristic city, divided by a vast wall.

Tensions are high, and the cold war they are embroiled in is about to go hot. In the midst of this all stands a Shadow Marshal, you. The most special of the special forces, tasked with maintaining the delicate balance.

From responding to bold attacks, to quiet infiltrations or all out combat, you will be required to adapt and think on your feet as you have to face a variety of escalating events that could destroy your home world.

Exactly! GT6 is going to blow our petrol heads!!!!!

kudos to sony to show off the next generation in a "different" way.
but they still left a lot open.
i find the vita integration a little short sighted, they should have rather made it connect with their Xperia line up (especially the new Z)

the next months are going to be exciting for gamers, this generation has been here for too long. i wonder what microsoft has up their sleeves...

Sony reveals how the PlayStation 4 Eye works

Sony's Shuhei Yoshida has dished the dirt on how the company's latest camera accessory will work. The PlayStation 4 Eye comes with a pair of 1,280 x 800 cameras, four microphones and an 85-degree field of view. The two lenses are designed to be used in a variety of ways, including triangulating the 3D space, gesture recognition, Kinect-style body tracking, and in conjunction with accessories like the Wonderbook or DualShock 4 controller. "It's not just a way to identify your player number, it also works like a PS Move," Yoshida said of the new DualShock's light bar. "It's an extension of the PS Move technology that we incorporated into the DualShock so that the camera can see where it is."

The Sony Studios chief used a PS Eye-style AR game as an example, saying that with the original camera, one lens had to do everything. With the new unit, one camera will concentrate on capturing the action and ensuring good picture quality, while the other is dedicated to motion tracking. Another reason that the Move functionality was incorporated into the DualShock is to enable the console know where you're sitting in relation to the TV (and your on-screen character). The company is also aiming to enable users to take 3D pictures and video and store it on the console. As for the microphones in the new Eye and how that'll impact interaction with the PlayStation 4 on a system level, Yoshida wasn't giving up any details. Though he said it'll be incorporated into games (a la Kinect voice commands on Xbox 360 games), he wouldn't give up whether you could use your voice to control the PlayStation 4 on a system level.

I hope this can save Sony..i like sony:)

I agree. It's sad to see what has happened to Sony. I grew up with the utmost admiration for Sony. Its design, quality and innovation. The most respected and valuable electronics giant. They now appear to be completely out manoeuvred by Samsung in almost every respect.

Immediate Gameplay
PS4 radically reduces the lag time between players and their content. PS4 features “suspend mode” which keeps the system in a low power state while preserving the game session. The time it takes today to boot a console and load a saved game will be a thing of the past. With PS4, gamers just hit the power button again and are promptly back playing the game at the exact point where they left off. Additionally, users can boot a variety of applications including a web browser when playing a game on PS4.
PS4 also enables games to be downloaded or updated in the background, or even in stand-by mode. The system takes it one step further by making digital titles playable as they are being downloaded. When a player purchases a game, PS4 downloads just a fraction of the data so gamers can start playing immediately, and the rest is downloaded in the background during actual gameplay.

DUALSHOCK®4 features a light bar on the top with three color LEDs that illuminate in various colors. The light bar illuminates to match the color of characters in a game to offer a simpler, more friendly way to identify players, even when playing side by side. The light bar also changes patterns during gameplay to provide useful information to gamers, such as when a character is critically low on health or has taken major damage.

Combined with the Mono Headset that will be bundled with PS4, gamers will also be able to chat with friends playing online, while hearing sound effects from the controller in hand.

As wondeful as those tech spec might seem, the real visual leap is less and less evident visually wise. Crysis 3 is already superior to all of that stuff, but yeah it runs on a pc which will be always superior to any given console. And the presentation mode (presenting everything bare the actual console body) sucks.

^Exactly. While the graphics are impressive, they aren't exactly mind blowing. Its only a marginal upgrade. I dont really see any kind of mind blowing innovation.

The only way I can see the PS4 taking off is if Sony make it some kind of a 4K media playback device, the very same way the PS3 became the mainstream blu ray playing device.
