Sorry to be out of teh loop on the forum, but I can take a stab at it. A 1989 Pontiac Grand Prix, huh? Well, I know beginner drivers want the Fast and the Furious but must start somewhere. I know when I started out, I drove a 1978 Buick Skyhawk. Then, my next ride was a Oldsmobile Omega. Imagine that? How about throwing some 22" Daytons on that bad boy....After that, I joined the Army and started to see that saving money wasn't all that difficult and with some motivation and a few monetary milestones to meet, I bought my first brand new car. Now I didn't just go oit and buy any car...I took about a month researching, comparing, test driving, looking at payment plans, insurance rates, and how it would effect my monthly living....So, I decided on A 1991 Chevrolet Camaro RS! I chose teh RS model because I couldn't afford the Z28 or the Iroc! And, I didn't even get power windows and went with a NO AIR CONDITIONING option! Hahahahaha...Imagine that!!! I was all about saving money, even on buying a new car. Guess where I was shipped after that? HOTTER THAN HELL, ARIZONA! With NO A/C....I was dying for 9 years! So, after that, I got a 1996 Corvette sold the Camaro. Then bought a rare 944 Porsche S2 Cabriolet. Since then, I traded in the Porsche and got some practicality in the garage. A 2001 Yukon. Useful, smooth, and it is "My OTHER Ride".....After that, I was clicking through the Auto Trader and came across a 2000 Corvette FRC for sale. Checked it out, loved it, pulled into a bank and got a deposit out. Unlike my 1st car (the Camaro) I spent just about 15 minutes with the owner on a test drive and a worthless amount of thought process. I bought it with no inspection or care to even get one. So, what does that have to do with your question? Everything.
You are a new driver. Don't rush into spending alot of money into the vehicle unless you know, this is your dream car. If it is something to get you from point A to point B, let it do that and it will do it just fine. The moment you start tinkering with performance modification, it gets very expensive. However, in this case....I might suggest simple things such as a K & N Air fliter, possibly small pulleys for under drive pull if they are available, and after market exhaust. Thats about it.
The vehicle is close to 20 years old, so it may be difficult to find "GO FAST" products for your application, so...Maybe best to save what you got and put it towards, " A FASTER CAR" at a later date.
Remember...I put alot of money into my car, whether I had it or not. I didn't care. I WANTED to go fast. I didn't need to. Along with that, comes high repair bills. Believe me....I KNOW!!! And, if your always looking to go faster, there are consequences such as speeding, tickets, etc. The consequences to that is higher insurance and less money to spend. So, ook around for some simple mods first or save your money and put it towards a "better" car.....It never hurts to have one car as a back up. Other than that, maybe there is a turbo or supercharger made for that model vehicle. I think the 2000 Grand Prix GTP was supercharged. Not sure of year of car, but it was a Grand Prix GTP. Maybe that could be an option?
And, if all else fails.....TRY THE TORNADO
