Owning a 320si

Twas a quiet Sunday morning, thought I'd take some stuff out of the engine bay. No particular reason other than getting a bit familiar with it. I suspect it does have a tiny vacuum leak somewhere, but there was nothing obvious.

... Still love the CF top end.

Next time I plan to take it as far as having the intake manifold off.. Mostly I want to clean it all up in advance of BMWCCGB Sommerfest at Donington... And I do need to check the oil separator.

Most probably you know, but just to say - the easiest way to check for vacuum leaks is with a cigarette, a leak sucks the smoke.

Also the thermostats have a habit of sticking closed, you should keep an eye on your temperatures.

Also, the CCV valve has a habit of not working after a few years. Try to open the oil cap with the engine running. If you feel vacuum, you need to replace your CCV.

I've heard that, never tried it. Problem is half the intake system isn't accessible, or at least visible, without taking it out anyway. On the older 6 cylinder cars I'm used to it would be much easier to see a leak that way.

Temps I'm happy with, been monitoring them closely.

CCV is a possibility, I'm looking into it. I think you can use the nipple on the oil separator to test as well.

Still hasn't had an expert eye cast over it yet. :(

I really need to stop procrastinating and get the car into a specialist. Too many little niggles after this showed up this morning.

Disappeared and its not picking up any new codes. Getting more convinced one of the sensors is misreporting.

Have the issue been resolved?

Yea...

...nope.

I'm going to get it trailered to a decent garage. I'm not happy driving it while I don't know what's going on, and the garage I want to take it to is about 150 miles away. Having some work done at the house so there's about 6 tonnes of sand and gravel, and a skip, blocking the car in at the moment - so it's likely to be a couple of weeks more before it gets looked at.

@Giannis I've still not got around to sorting out INPA, mostly because I need to buy a new laptop first, but I'm increasingly seeing the need for it! The codes the Carly is picking up (if it does) make no sense.

So, whilst my car is still with a legendary garage known for their work with automobiles from Munich, I've got no other updates until I get the car back (might need a GoFundMe page tho...), in the mean time...

FIA homologation for the Si engine for use in Formula 3...

from the book of Faces

Right, after the best part of 14 months, I finally have my car back!

I shipped it off down to Munich Legends last February after the 'not starting' issue became untenable, and it also needed an MOT. The initial fault finding inspection revealed that the obvious issues had been down to an iffy fuel pick up, 'not too bad' I thought.

... however, it also revealed a slight noisy bottom end and a compression issue on one of the cylinders. In an attempt to rectify the knocking from the bottom end, new bearing shells were fitted, then an inspection of the top end revealed some damage to the block. This engine had originally failed at about 35,000 miles, and had received the usual replacement steel liners from a somewhat well known source. This fact was why I was more comfortable in buying this specific car, rather than most of the others I'd looked it.

It transpires though, that these had not been fitted properly and remained proud of the block by a fraction. This had put excessive stress on the head gasket, which had ended up blowing through, into the block material, which was consequently getting eaten by the combustion.

The liners were removed, the block cold sprayed and re-decked to repair the damage, and new, bespoke, liners were drawn up and fitted. These liners are of an interlocking design to remove any chance of movement further down line. There was also damage to one of the valve seats, which was replaced.

All up (including the MOT, which didn't require any other work), the bill was not insignificant - around £9000. To be fair to ML, they'd been considerate of the economics of the project, and taking them at their word, invested more time into it than was invoiced. Stuart at ML is also an Si owner, with one of his being in the workshop when I collected mine. Given one of the problems with this car is finding a mechanic that actually knows what they're dealing with, it's worth the 300 mile round trip for this reason alone.

Some interesting stuff in the show room too..

M1 restoration...

It did take a while, which was a little frustrating, mostly because of worries about the costs potentially spiralling out of control, but since my clutch knee's been banjaxed for months I wouldn't have been able to drive it much earlier anyway. One way or the other, very glad to have it back, and it definitely runs like new, for a high-revving four it is absolutely buttery smooth all the way up the rev range - well... to 4,500 anyway, I'm not taking it higher until it's got another couple of hundred miles run in on it... but it was always good above 5k... should be better now!

Next jobs; get the wheels refurbed properly, get the rear bumper repainted, find a way of integrating a bluetooth display for the live diagnostics - still paranoid about temps :D

I'm glad you got your si back, Mat! May you enjoy it in good health.

Being apart from old bimmers for a long time can have adverse effects on your health. I'm into my second week of the E39 being in the shop and I daily the beige S60 after quite a long time. Yesterday, I had my first period.

I've been driving a T9 308 recently... I'm currently drinking a low-alcohol beer, and my lunch was Vegan... it may be too late for me.

After a couple of weeks of good motoring... the car's decided it wants to play fault-code Bingo...

I believe the prize on this occasion is new DSC Pulse generators (a.k.a. wheel speed sensors) ... but we'll see.

Anyhow...

Though I'm keen to keep the car original, I've seen another Si running 10mm spacers on the front and 20mm on the back, which seem to address the wheels sitting too deep in the arches nicely... added to the list once the latest round of problems are sorted out.

@Giannis ISTA is installed, so I've got technical info, but it's not communicating with the car.

On the plus side, I've got INPA too, and that seems to work...

So having pulled out the wheel speed sensor I thought was iffy, and checking it with a multimeter, I was pretty sure that was the problem... however, having re-fitted it to see if INPA showed a signal....

1715527720889.jpg

... it did.

Turned the car off and on again, pulled off the drive, and all the warnings disappeared. So it might just have been an iffy connection... the housing the connector lives in was caked up with crap...

1715527973028.jpg

So anyway, who knows...

Would like to get ISTA working properly though.

I haven't had any success with INPA, myself, as well. Then, I found PASoft which is an absolute gem for the E39, so I gave up. ISTA is a good tool, as well!

So, annoyingly, the car threw the same bunch of warning lights at me again yesterday.

Figured I'd just replace the wheel speed sensor anyway...

1719083772228.jpg

... fitted this afternoon and it seems to have got rid of the warnings again... for now. When I enquired back in May this was a £90 part, today it was £115, shoulda just done it then! In fact, I shoulda just bought one from German, Swedish & French for half the price - but I do covet the roundel on all receipts!

Side note: Dealer had more Ineos Grenadiers on the forecourt than new 5 or 7 examples... and they only had two Grenadiers. Think they might be going downhill quite a bit.

This weeks error code bingo:

2EFE Motor Fan...

This didn't kick in so I got a temperature warning and found that the coolant had got to 120°C. Used INPA to manual test it, and it didn't work. Pulled the fuse, put it back in, fan works, kicks in when it's supposed to. Error codes cleared, haven't come back. Pulled out a load of coolant to check for any oil as I'm massively paranoid about blowing the gasket again, but it looks crystal.

2D07 Throttle Valve potentiometer mismatch
2CF8 Throttle Valve potentiometer error
2CFA Throttle Valve potentiometer implausible for Air Mass.

Pulled out the throttle body, cleaned it up, wiggled a few leads, popped it back in, cleared the error codes, did a throttle body adaptation reset, and it seemed to sort it.

At this point I'm fairly sure none of these problems have been genuine problems, but possibly more a symptom of electrical and/or electronic faults.

So there's that...

... and there's the fact it's gotten a bit smokey on start up.

I fear I may be taking it off the road again soon.
