We all know that when a new BMW arrives, in some way or another we hear that inspiration comes from the past as well as the present and future.
BMW have a rich archive of iconic vehicles and especially no such vehicle can be definitive as the classic BMW CS/CSi and CSL models.

Whether they cruised along boulevards or tore up race tracks in areodynamics that earned the term "Batmobile" as a historic nod to the iconic crime fighter.
The CS/CSi and CSL earn a rightful place as an iconic BMW.

At BMW aswell as thinking about the future , there is also a connection to the past. Especially with the "What if?" series of Hommage concepts that do their best to link today's mobility needs to the iconic appearances of the past.
Such Hommages such as the BMW M1 , BMW MM and the latest BMW 328 Hommage.

Autobild in a part of their own "What if?" series in which classics are re-invented apply this thinking to the BMW CS to debate the question "What if?"
Of course BMW will continue to ask "What if?" with both the CS/CSi/CSL and the classic 2002 earmarked for future Hommage's. The 2002 will be the lead-in car for the all new 2er Coupe. A car that inherits some of the design thinking of the original 2002 as it is no longer a 1er.

^1er is a very nice car minus the front..and old BMW´s had amazing fronts..
So together it becomes pretty exciting to me..:D

It's actually when you look at it ... It appears to be "Raw" But look closely especially the headlights at the at the bonnet line - Look at that shape...Now enlage that triangular outline and you get a look that is very familiar with the F20. It wont come with this rawness and retro kick-back but provides a basis for the progressive areas of the design.

SCOTT, is BMW going to present any Concept we haven´t seen yet in the IAA?.

I really like the front of that chop. I hope BMW comes with a model with such a look, or a bit like the front in SKY's avatar!

The F20 uses the same basic shark nose design as the E9, E21 and this "concept", but the execution/proportions are not right in the F20. I will have to regard the F20 the same way I think of the E65 - first trembling steps at something new, not good, but a good start.

So is BMW going to give the upper ranges a more connected drive look, with the broad kidneys and more angular lights, and then give the entry level models more this kind of 328 hommage look, with the taller narrower kidneys and single round headlights?

Or are they going to come out with a range of hommage cars like Volkswagen are planning seeing as Scott says there are other hommage models like the 507 still to come?

Hey, we car nuts love to dream...look carefully and just imagine for a second that this is a production model:icondrool

Same as the resurrection of the Chevy Camaro, Ford Mustang etc...

Mostly I will offer the 'old lefty' but for this CS you may have both testicles:D

No impoliteness but i just have to disagree. come on, the F20 has nothing to do with this.

Actually back in the days before the economic collapse, And at the release of the M1 Hommage BMW were thinking of a Heritage line in which modern interpretations of classic BMW's could use existing mechnicals but with a bespoke body and interior and priced at a premium. It did not come to fruitition unfortunately.
Although it would have been interesting to see.

In the early design stages of the 1er. )One or two ideas incorporated a classic deep BMW grille which was longer rather than being wider. One I think made it to the final stages but was rejected because it was too "Alfa Romeoish" in appearance with hidden door handles and curves over the body - The headlights were oblong shaped and the rear lights were triangles mounted sideways - avantgarde it was but looked more Italian than German.

Wanna see it!

I remember AMS renders from 10 years ago or even longer, showing retro looking Bimmers using modern tech. BMW has been thinking about it for a long, long time already. I really hope we will see something in the not too distant future! These shark like vertical grille designs and round headlights without housing like the old school Bimmers are just stunningly awesome.
And if there's one car company that can remake cars it's BMW.

The step taken with the new F30, with the headlights a bit hidden under the bonnet, is the route to follow. Problem is that I think BMW will introduce the kidneys seen on the Vision Connected Drive rather than the ones on the 328 hommage.

Yeah, I think they will go for big horizontal rather than vertical. But there should be at least one special model with the vertical grille as well.

And I badly want to see headlights like on the E34, E30 and so. Not the same headlights we have had on every BMW model since the E36 (exept the E46 Compact)...
