My experience is exactly the same. I was 9 years old when I first watched it in 1987 and the only thing that fascinated me was Robocop suit itself and how Peter Weller was able to make a small kid believe, he indeed was a robot.
Decades later in circa 2003 - 2004, I watched it again on TV and understood the political and social undertones ranging from apartheid, racism, religion, moral responsibility and how it conflicts with the law etc.
I discovered the movie has everything in it gore, blood, violence, soul, emotions and a message on how corporations are taking control of everything.
It was prophetic in the sense that whatever Paul Verhoeven envisioned in the future, is happening 30 years later (look at Detroit in the movie and how Detroit is today).
There are many religious hidden references to christianity in the movie like resurrection, walking on water etc. which I noticed only once I was a grown up adult who could understand those.
Regarding this remake, they are trying to re-hash a classic old movie that was perfection (despite the outdated special effects, but the Robocop suit holds up very well still), but I must admit the trailer looks interesting.
Yes, great film. I saw it first when I was 11 which was far too young. This new one seems to have lost the satirical humour.
Also, that's not a trailer. That's the whole film in two minutes. Why do they always show too much?
