SEAT Ateca SUV first official pics are out

The first official images with SEAT’s first SUV are out ahead of an imminent reveal.

As it turns out, the high-riding model from Martorell is in fact called “Ateca” as opposed to the “Aran” moniker speculated in the media in recent weeks. The compact crossover doesn’t have what we would call a surprising design since many of the styling cues are borrowed from the Leon. It rides on the same MQB platform and you can imagine it will be a crucial model in SEAT’s lineup taking into account it is the company’s first model of this type and aims to grab a piece of the crossover action in Europe.

Along with the attached leaked official images, we also have some preliminary technical specifications, including data about engines. The range will kick off with a turbocharged three-cylinder, 1.0-liter developing 110 horsepower, followed by the beefier turbo 150-hp 1.4-liter benefitting from cylinder deactivation. On the diesel side we find the usual 110-hp 1.6 TDI and a larger 2.0 TDI with 150 hp and 184 hp.

All motors will work as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, but the stronger engines will be optionally offered with a dual-clutch, seven-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive will be standard on the lesser models, but select engines with four cylinders will get SEAT’s 4Drive all-paw setup at an additional cost.

SEAT’s answer to the Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Qashqai, and other models in the compact crossover segment will be officially revealed later today. The Ateca will make the trip to Geneva next month and will go on sale in the second half of the year.

Hmm, that looks surprisingly decent to be a Seat.

Seat and Skoda are both starting to look more and more like VW and Audi. Its such a pity they cant differentiate them more. The front and rear light design and the door handles and character line, it screams VW. In spite of this I still do like it, the interior looks quite neat!

Looks good outside. You could even put a VW badge on it... Interior is less stylish though.

neat, i would pick it over a VW, why pay the premium, its the same damn car.
if you just want to get from a to b, whats the point.. its not like you can fetch some tail cause you drive a passat.

I wonder why you think so.

Is it because of the design, the parts sharing, the model range?

The Concept was better.

Exactly. Not only the concept was better, people (specially spanish people) wait more from SEAT and this model is very regular. If you see the rear part, looks like more the rear from Ford Kuga. The design is very regular. If they opted to use the concept, any more bold, this car could outstand among the competitors.

Some people from SEAT talk that the new SEAT's strategy is wrong. The most of competitors from SEAT keeps one MPV and one SUV (inf they haven't wo, one 5-seats and other with 7-seats) and they sells two models (MPV and SUV). In SEAT, the new strategy is only the SUV; they want to increase the units sold with this car and get positives profits; is it important? Yes, of course, but they decided to kill the Altea and launch this Ateca to cover the MPV segment and the SUV segment.

As much as I dislike Hyundai /Kia for being such copycats, the new Tucson piss all over this Seat (and Renault Kadjar, Nissan Qashqai, Ford Kuga/Escape, etc).

Seat Ateca to start from £17,990 in the UK

Seat's first SUV is scheduled to reach dealerships across the United Kingdom this September, but it's already available for order.

One of its "weapons" against the established competition will be its price tag, which is lower than one of its main rivals, the Nissan Qashqai.

The entry-level Ateca that's powered a 3-cylinder 1.0-liter TSI petrol engine rated at 113 HP will start from £17,990 while further up the range other powertrains include the 1.4-liter TSI with 148 HP, a 1.6-liter TDI rated at 113 HP and a 2.0-liter TDI in two different outputs, with 148 HP and 187 HP.

All come with front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, while the 7-speed DSG will be offered on the more powerful mills and AWD only on the diesel units.

Named after a village in Spain, the Ateca is underpinned by the MQB platform made by the VW Group and it is just 2 cm shorter than the Qashqai, while sharing the 2.64 m wheelbase with its compact hatch sibling, the Leon.

On a side note, the next-gen if the Ibiza that is expected in 2017 will underpin a subcompact crossover. This will be sized similarly to the Nissan Juke and it's believed to come in early 2018, possibly followed by a large SUV at the end of the decade.
