Boxster/Cayman (981/987) Official: Porsche Boxster Spyder

The Porsche 987 is the internal designation for the second generation Porsche Boxster sports car, built from 2004 to 2012. In 2005, it was joined in the range by the new Cayman fastback coupé (project 987c).

This is the new Porsche Boxster Spyder and, as the arrival of any new Porsche tends to be a polarising event, you’ll either be sighing in disgust or yelping in delight. The bare facts? This Boxster Spyder is Porsche’s lightest and quickest current-gen roadster yet thanks to the folding roof being junked.

The Spyder will be unveiled at the LA Auto Show in December 2009, and it’s not a run-out limited edition like previous Spyder-tagged Boxsters, but the third (and most expensive) permanent addition to the roadster range.
So the new Porsche Boxster Spyder doesn’t have a convertible roof?

Well it does. Sort of. To create the Spyder Porsche has binned the folding roof and all its associated mechanics, and in its place comes a bit of cloth that attaches to the windscreen and hooks onto the new rear deck. Even with the side windows up and the glass wind deflector in place, there’ll still be a few gaps letting the wind in. It’s only meant for low-speed driving – Porsche quotes the 166mph top speed without the roof. Shouting to be heard, we presume.

And that new rear deck?

It’s the most noticeable difference between the Spyder and a standard Boxster – there’s now a big pair of power domes behind the rear seats and a larger rear spoiler. Other tweaks include revised side intakes, a new front bumper and those retro stickers.
What about inside, or under the (mid-engined) bonnet?

The interior gets some fancy door pulls from the GT3 RS and weight-saving carbon buckets. Sports suspension, a lower centre of gravity and – at a relatively trim 1275kg – an 80kg weight advantage over a Boxster S should make the Spyder the sharpest Boxster yet.
And with an extra 10bhp from the engine – taking the total from the 3.4-litre flat-six to 316bhp – and the Spyder is also two-tenths quicker to 62mph than a regular S, knocking the benchmark sprint out in 4.8 seconds.
Normal Porsche options like PDK, sat-nav and ceramic brakes will be available, the stickers will be a delete option, and customers should also be able to swap the hardcore seats for more comfort-oriented items. UK sales start in February 2010 with prices set at £44,643, just a few grand more than a Boxster S. Want one?

That's Porsche's way of saying, "if you don't get the message now, you never f@$king will!"

You gotta admire them. Even for their unbridled arrogance at least...

As for this lil' Boxster Sypder? Stunning in every way - a masterpiece of open-top motoring - but clearly not a first-buy Porsche purchase. Certainly, it's a collector's piece and as pretty as it is, I'd rather buy a stock Boxster and spec it up a little (we have a gorgeous white on with silver decals just down the road at Porsche SA). Nevertheless, being a rich man would be nice because having one of these next to a new 911 Sport Classic would make me rather happy I'd say.

Gorgeous, gorgeous!

OMIGOSH!

I don't like the Boxster but I fell in love with the Spyder. Just got an invitation to an "100 Jahre Ferry Porsche" event on the 21th. Hopefully I'll get some more info about the Spyder there (of at least the price of the GT3 RS door handles).

I'm sighing in disgust. What a retarded looking car with the roof up. A true hairdresser gay car. Wannabe Porsche, giant failure.

I'm glad, there is still the standard Boxster and Boxster S…well this is a fantastic car, if you already have 4 or more of them. More a collector's item…

Porsche is really starting to take its customer for dudes.

First the Sport Classic: a way of selling you a rear wing for the price of a normal car.
Second this: remove the top and boost the price. Any idea about the premium over a standard Boxster? Given that the motor/weight change, it will be massive...

Ridiculous.

In the past, a Porsche Spyder was bit more than the mere removal of the roof, replaced by a bit of plastic to look nice. It for instance had a shortened windshield and really looked the part. Here it'd be way better with a lowered windshield along with a lowered seating position in the car...

This is really insane. They seem to be desperate for money and willing to squeeze the clients to the max.

Fortunately, the standard Boxster, Cayman, 911 are still there to show Porsche still is one of the very best carmakers on earth.

Because these special series (whose price is the only remarkable novelty), along with the horrible Cayenne...:t-banghea

Beautiful. Impressive, how they improved on an already good-looking car! New rims & the new front-end looks very hot! :usa7uh:

Looks hot! I suppose those are air vents behind the seats, kind of reminds me of the veyron. Although it looks really awkward with the cloth top.

Too gimmicky.
Too underpowered.
Too overpriced.

This car is not needed and I predict it to flop, it's pure excess.

Looks better then regular Boxster... but then again, I don't like the Boxster anyhow.

Gimme a Cayman any day.

The premium over the Boxster S is a stupid £4,000 here in the UK. Basically it has the same price as the Cayman S. As far as weight is concerned, the Spyder has a 80kg advantage over the Boxster S. To me, it's a not a car but more of a toy for people with a little too much money. Sales will be appallingly low, especially when the cabin can only be covered with a piece of cloth that's penetrable by rain, wind and low temperatures. However, there is a chance that Porsche will introduce a targa top, similar to the one on the Veyron Grand Sport, to further milk the cow.

But in economic times like these, I fail to see a sustainable demand for a wasteful car of this kind. It doesn't even look that great and for the average customers it has no unique selling point over the Boxster S.
